Freescale Joins TimeSys OnBoard Program to Provide Comprehensive Commercial Source for Embedded Linux on Freescale PowerPC Processors

SAN FRANCISCO, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE --
TimeSys(R) Corporation, a leader in embedded Linux(R) technologies and
development tools, today announced that Freescale Semiconductor's NCSG
(Networking and Computing Systems Group) has joined the TimeSys OnBoard
Program(TM) to continuously make the latest Freescale-developed Linux
optimizations for Freescale products based on the PowerPC architecture
available to OEMs/ODMs in commercially supported TimeStorm(R) Linux
Development Kits (LDKs) from TimeSys.
The OnBoard Program is the embedded Linux industry's most comprehensive
program for hosting, certifying, distributing and supporting commercialized
Linux distributions. Through the OnBoard program, TimeSys will continuously
package, maintain and support TimeStorm(R) Linux Development Kits (LDKs) with
the latest Freescale-developed enhancements for the PowerPC architecture,
which is an integral part of embedded devices used in networking,
communications, military, storage and pervasive computing applications.
"Freescale recognizes the growing importance of open source Linux
solutions for our customers, and we strive to provide the most effective
enablement of these solutions for our product families," said David
Mothersole, Distinguished Technology Fellow and Chief Technology Officer for
Freescale's Networking and Computing Systems Group. "By joining the TimeSys
OnBoard Program, TimeSys will commercialize and support all of our Linux
enhancements and make them available to the vast community of embedded Linux
developers building products that use Freescale's processors based on the
PowerPC architecture, which includes the new MPC8360E PowerQUICC(TM) II Pro
processor family."
The first Freescale-optimized TimeStorm LDKs delivered through the OnBoard
Program are now available for Freescale's MPC8555E, MPC8560 and MPC8272
processors. All TimeStorm LDKs include complete 2.6-based embedded Linux
distributions with ready-to-run target images (kernel and root file system)
and the Eclipse 3.0-based TimeStorm Linux Development Suite(R) (LDS) cross-
development environment to facilitate application development, as well as
kernel and device driver platform customization.
"TimeSys will continuously deliver complete Linux distributions with the
latest Freescale optimizations for Freescale's products based on the PowerPC
architecture, supporting a variety of applications ranging from wireless base
stations and network storage devices to game consoles and automotive systems,"
said Larry Weidman, president and CEO of TimeSys. "We are pleased to welcome
Freescale, a market-leading global provider of embedded processors across a
range of high-growth industries, into the OnBoard Program."
