PRSA-Detroit Chapter Makes Official Bid to Pitch International Conference of Public Relations Professionals

General Motors Announces Commitment to be a Lead Sponsor

DETROIT, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Detroit Chapter of the Public
Relations Society of America (PRSA)(http://www.prsa.org ) announced yesterday
its intent to pitch Detroit as the host city for the 2009 International
Conference, an annual event that is the signature conference for public
relations professionals. The announcement was made by PRSA-Detroit Chapter
officials at an event featuring Tom Kowaleski, vice president of global
communications for General Motors Corp (GM). As part of the announcement,
Kowaleski explained GM would be a lead sponsor for a Detroit based conference
with a $25,000 commitment.
"Detroit has long been a strong market for public relations professionals,
with some 500 members in the Detroit Chapter of PRSA alone," said Lisa Vallee-
Smith, APR, president of PRSA-Detroit. "We are enthusiastic and optimistic
about our attracting this prestigious event to Detroit."
Kowaleski added, "GM has a beautiful riverfront headquarters facility in a
dynamic city and would be proud to help showcase the 2009 PRSA International
Conference in the Motor City."
Key members of PRSA-Detroit's leadership have held initial discussions and
planning sessions with PRSA National to understand the specific bid
specifications for Detroit to be a host city. As a result, a steering
committee of local PR professionals as well as other interested parties has
been formed to cohesively address all the requirements of the bid. Interested
individuals may email Nancy Skidmore at nskidmore@earthlink.net to express
interest in serving. A formal bid for the international conference will be
presented later this year.
For 2009, PRSA-Detroit is proposing the Detroit Marriott Renaissance
Center Hotel as the site location for the conference. The 72-story hotel is
located just yards from the Detroit riverfront and is currently receiving a
$120 million renovation. The hotel is located at the start of Detroit's
financial district and is an ideal location for the thousands of attendees
that are expected to participate. Last year's PRSA International Conference
attracted over 2,000 communication professionals and student attendees. PRSA-
Detroit previously hosted the international conference in 1985.
PRSA is the world's largest organization for public relations
professionals. Its nearly 20,000 members, organized into 116 chapters,
represent business and industry, technology, counseling firms, government,
associations, hospitals, schools, professional services firms and nonprofit
organizations. Chartered in 1947, PRSA has been offering value-added services
to its members including the international conference, the preeminent
gathering of public relations professionals in the world.
"The City of Detroit is currently undergoing the country's largest urban
redevelopment boom of nearly $20 billion and would make a great location for
the 2009 PRSA International Conference," said Larry Alexander, president and
CEO of the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitor's Bureau. "Through the
efforts and contributions of public representatives, corporate leaders and
members of our community, Detroit has been selected as home to a sizeable list
of upcoming international events including Super Bowl XL in 2006."
