LUDWIGSBURG, Germany, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- As a precursor of good
things to come, MANN+HUMMEL, has been selected by a U.S. OEM Automaker to
supply a fuel filter module for diesel engines to be installed in a broad
range of globally marketed vehicles.
MANN+HUMMEL has combined innovative engineering technology with the use of
advanced components to provide leadership in the growing role of clean diesel
engines. Many of these diesel-enhancing products are being highlighted at the
SAE 2005 World Congress at Cobo Hall in Detroit, April 11-14.
"Diesel-powered cars and trucks already make up more than 40% of new-
vehicle sales in Europe, nearly doubling in popularity in the last six years.
In the U.S., new diesel emissions regulations and the cleaner diesel fuels
coming in 2006 raise the need for innovative engine performance solutions.
Both U.S. and European automakers see that as an opportunity and are planning
to increase the offering of clean diesel-powered vehicles to their customers,"
said Dr. Wilfried Lehr, managing director of MANN+HUMMEL's Automotive Original
Equipment Division.
As an experienced, recognized pioneer in the development of air, oil and
fuel filtration systems, MANN+HUMMEL is providing automakers with innovative,
high-quality product solutions, like the all-new plastic cylinder head cover
module with integrated intake manifold and swirl function, which is currently
in production for a V-6 diesel engine.
This module includes a dozen distinct components, all of injection-molded
thermoplastics. The package includes cam covers, active intake manifolds,
throttle body, EGR bell, oil filler cap and a vacuum actuator for the
injection-molded port deactivation flaps. "This first-of-its-kind cylinder
head module with integrated intake manifold not only saves costs and shaves
weight, it reduces emissions while maintaining performance," said Lehr.
MANN+HUMMEL, a development partner and original equipment supplier for the
international automotive industry, currently supplies several components for
diesel passenger cars; including the oil filtration module for a best selling
diesel passenger car in the U.S. market.
This module contains filtration, cooling and bypass valve functions.
Further diesel development for this automaker included a fuel-filter module
that has an integrated cooler, water separation and auto sensor functions. It
is currently in production in a diesel that powers an SUV sold in both Europe
and North America.
Other MANN+HUMMEL diesel technology on display at SAE 2005 includes:
* An all-new spindle-less oil centrifuge with a fully plastic rotor that
will be used on North American commercial diesel engines. The high-speed oil
centrifuge spins the oil at up to 10,000 rpm and forces soot and metallic
particles to the outer wall of the unit; where it is trapped and collected so
it cannot be reintroduced into the lubricating oil supply.
* One-piece, thermoplastic turbocharger air ducts, currently in use on
"cold-side" (charged air output) applications. The single piece eliminates
several parts in the assembly, including hoses, hose clamps, clamp sleeves and
connecting brackets. MANN+HUMMEL also supplies an innovative hot side charged
air duct, manufactured by blow molding high temperature plastic.
