Alliance Will Bring State-of-the-Art Technologies and
Healthcare Integration to Central Texas
NEW YORK, March 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Siemens Corporation, a
subsidiary of Siemens AG (NYSE: SI), announced today that it has entered into
a multi-year alliance with Scott & White Memorial Hospital and Scott, Sherwood
and Brindley Foundation ("Scott & White") to develop the Center for Advanced
Medicine, a fully integrated, all-digital healthcare facility in Temple,
Texas. The new facility, scheduled to open in the fall of 2005, is a
525,000-square-foot, 361-bed, eight-story inpatient facility. Siemens'
technologies will also be incorporated into Scott & White's other facilities
located across Central Texas, including:

-- The new Scott & White Pavilion, a 90,000 square-foot building, located
in Temple, designed to support primarily Hospital Outpatient Surgery
and to serve as the new Scott & White Eye Institute;
-- The Scott & White Center for Diagnostic and Specialty Care, located in
Round Rock, Texas, including a surgical center, state-of-the-art
diagnostic facilities, and a medical office complex (scheduled to open
in 2004);
-- A new Hilton Garden Inn to be located across the street from the Center
for Advanced Medicine in Temple;
-- Scott & White's 17 regional clinics; and
-- Scott & White's research facilities.
The alliance originated because of Siemens' ability to provide
sophisticated technology products and integrate complex systems across
multiple functions and locations. Siemens will support Scott & White in five
core areas: healthcare information technology (IT) applications and
infrastructure, medical equipment, telecommunications, power and "smart"
building technologies.
"This is an exciting moment in Scott & White's 100-year history and we
believe it will be an even more significant milestone in the evolution of
healthcare in Central Texas," said Dr. Alfred Knight, president & CEO at Scott
& White. "With breakthrough integration of the best technologies from
Siemens, we will set the standard for state-of-the-art healthcare delivery in
the U.S. Scott & White has always been known for its commitment to
innovation, excellence and scholarship. Now we are building on those
principles. Our physicians and our patients will benefit not only from the
superior medical equipment we will bring to the region but also from dramatic
improvements in workflow and processes that directly impact patient care."
Scott & White's plan is to incorporate Siemens' technologies over the next
ten years, including medical equipment solutions such as patient monitoring
and syngo(R), Siemens' comprehensive software solution for all medical imaging
tasks, applications and systems; HiPath, Siemens' voice and data networking
system, and phone systems; smart building technologies such as fire alarm and
security, and a power substation; and IT solutions, including Soarian(TM), and
other systems to integrate the Scott & White network. Soarian(TM), the first
health information solution built entirely for the web, enables physicians to
seamlessly navigate comprehensive patient information, such as vital signs,
images, and test results and enter orders, and update information
electronically. Soarian(TM) also generates alerts on factors such as drug
interactions and dosing at the time the physician enters the order, helping to
avert potential medication-related errors. Ultimately, Soarian's(TM)
workflow-engineering synchronizes across the health enterprise, helping to
improve the care process, quality and outcomes.
"We are thrilled to help Scott & White realize their vision of building a
premier digital healthcare facility. We share their commitment to creating a
health system - and ultimately an experience - that is totally focused on
delivering the best patient care," said Klaus Kleinfeld, president and CEO of
Siemens Corporation. "In today's healthcare environment, streamlining
processes is critical to the two challenges all healthcare organizations face
- improving patient care and lowering costs. Siemens' technologies and
integration expertise will enhance the standardization of Scott & White's
systems and optimize workflow to provide more effective and efficient patient
care."
