RICHMOND, Va., March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- How can rural communities in
Appalachia attract new companies and create new jobs? What special problems do
new businesses pose for local leaders determined to protect the environment
and preserve their community's quality of life?
The Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta, Cleveland, and Richmond, and the
Appalachian Regional Commission will co-sponsor a conference to discuss these
issues on Thursday, April 26, at the MeadowView Conference Resort and
Convention Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
"An Appalachian Awakening: A Workforce Development Conference" will
provide practical models and tools that can be used by local development
leaders to find and create jobs that are a "right-fit" for rural communities.
The day-long conference will be divided into two sessions. Session one,
"Winning Strategies for Workforce Development," will highlight speakers from
West Virginia University, the Appalachian Corridor Technology Fund, and the
Center for Workforce Development. Speakers will discuss how rural areas can
attract companies to maintain a competitive edge.
Session Two, "Building Sustainable Communities," will highlight speakers
from the Tennessee Valley Development Authority, the University of Kentucky,
and the American Planning Association. They will address such topics as the
importance of protecting the environment, building quality communities, and
providing zoning to enhance business/neighborhood good will.
Sponsor representatives attending the conference include ARC Federal Co-
Chairman Jesse L. White Jr. and Federal Reserve System Community Affairs
Officers Ruth Clevenger, Courtney Dufries, and Jackson L. Blanton.
David H. Ciscel, professor of economics in the Fogelman College of
Business and Economics at the University of Memphis, will deliver the keynote
address: "Bringing Value Added to Rural Development in the 21st Century." Dr.
Ciscel's research includes issues in gender and labor, regional and urban
development, and welfare reform.
