CORBA-Based Fault Tolerance Solution Helps Systems Run Forever
EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, SAN FRANCISCO, March 13 /PRNewswire/ --
Eternal Systems, Inc., a leading provider of software that helps systems run
forever, today announced a technology and reseller partnership with Highlander
Engineering, a leading supplier of CORBA-compliant middleware for connecting
intelligent devices. The two companies will engage in joint sales, marketing
and other activities dedicated to addressing the growing demand for embedded
middleware (CORBA) fault tolerance solutions.
The partnership has already resulted in the development of Eternal Systems
FT/ORB(TM) 2.0 for Highlander VisiBroker-RT ORB running on the Wind River
Systems VxWorks operating system. Highlander VisiBroker-RT ORB is the leading
real-time object request broker running on VxWorks. Highlander VisiBroker-RT
ORB is a CORBA-compliant framework that speeds the development of distributed,
embedded applications. This release of FT/ORB 2.0 will be sold and supported
by Highlander Engineering as part of the partnership agreement.
"Eternal Systems FT/ORB 2.0 gives Highlander customers the fault-tolerant
solution they need to ensure their critical embedded CORBA applications run
forever," said Ken Black, founder and CEO of Highlander. "Together, our
embedded solutions simplify and accelerate the development of fault-tolerant
distributed applications by hiding the complexity of delivering 'five 9s' or
better fault tolerance and enabling developers to work at a higher level of
abstraction so they can focus on their core competencies."
"Our strategic alliance with Highlander Engineering is further evidence of
our commitment to providing high-quality, off-the-shelf,
application-transparent continuous availability and fault tolerance solutions
at very attractive price points that help developers of embedded systems lower
costs and speed time-to-market," said Tom Laux, president of Eternal Systems.
"Compatibility with VisiBroker-RT significantly improves our market coverage,
and we look forward to working with Highlander and other partners as we
further expand our family of FT/ORB products."
Designed for distributed, multi-tiered, embedded computing environments,
Eternal Systems FT/ORB 2.0 transforms true fault tolerance from a costly,
complex, custom programming project requiring specialized knowledge to an
affordable, easy-to-use, off-the-shelf solution any programmer can use to
quickly make an application fault tolerant. Ideal for use in computer-based
communications, military and aerospace, industrial control, transportation and
medical systems, the software's low cost and ease-of-use make implementing
true fault tolerance practical for a much broader range of applications than
was possible before. FT/ORB 2.0 includes thinFT(TM), etGateway(TM),
etConsole(TM) and etEngine(TM) components for quickly implementing
fault-tolerant solutions in a broad range of distributed embedded computer
environments.

About Eternal Systems
Eternal Systems software makes it fast and affordable to create true
fault-tolerant embedded applications that run forever for systems where
failure would be extraordinarily costly or catastrophic. Designed for the
distributed, multi-tiered computing environments typically found in the
communications, military and aerospace, industrial control, transportation and
medical industries, Eternal Systems' standards-based fault-tolerance
infrastructure software enables developers to achieve true fault tolerance in
new and existing applications without specialized programming expertise or the
cost or complexity of custom coding.
Founded in 1998 by a group of individuals with more than a quarter century
of experience in developing and refining fault tolerance and high availability
technology, Eternal Systems is recognized for its leadership role in
establishing the Object Management Group's Fault Tolerant CORBA standard. The
company has received funding from the California Technology Investment
Program, the US Department of Commerce Advance Technology Program and Smart
Technology Ventures, and launched its first commercial product, the etEngine,
in May 2001. Eternal Systems has its headquarters in Santa Barbara, Calif.,
and maintains its established ties with the Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Eternal
