Rational Software Named Market Share Leader in Embedded Software-Modeling and
Software Testing by Industry Analyst Firm VDC

    SAN FRANCISCO, March 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- At CMP's Embedded
Systems Conference, Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL) today outlined its full
support for the embedded software development market with the availability of
the industry's first complete lifecycle solution for embedded and real-time
software developers.
The Rational embedded development solution includes Rational Rose(R)
RealTime for model-driven development and testing, Rational(R) Test RealTime
for comprehensive, code-based automated testing and run-time analysis,
Rational(R) ClearCase(R) for software configuration management, Rational(R)
ClearQuest(R) for activity management and defect tracking, Rational(R)
RequisitePro(R) for team-based requirements management, Rational(R)
TestManager for centralized management of all test activities and artifacts,
and the Rational Unified Process(R) for best practices guidance. These tools
are tightly integrated and contain many specific features to fit the needs of
real-time and embedded software developers.
Venture Development Corporation (VDC), a leading independent market
research firm, recently released a report on the embedded software market
entitled, "The Embedded Software Strategic Market Intelligence Program
2001/2002 Volume IV: World Market for Embedded Operating Systems, Software
Development Tools, Design Automation Tools, and Test Automation Tools." The
report ranked Rational as the leading tools vendor for embedded modeling and
embedded software test automation. The report also named Rational Test
RealTime the leading embedded test automation tool, and stated that Rational's
modeling tools, Rational Rose and Rational Rose RealTime, are overwhelmingly
preferred by embedded software developers.
"Our research shows that embedded software is becoming more complex and
product development cycles are constantly being compressed. One of the key
ways developers are addressing these challenges is by turning to software
modeling and test tools, which automate much of the development process," said
Chris Lanfear, Software Practice Director, Embedded Systems for VDC.
"Rational is clearly positioned to maintain market leadership through its
extensive product offerings, strong mind share among developers, and active
role in the development of the UML standard."
The most recent version of Rational Test RealTime, released in November
2001, was enhanced with two new features that track down difficult run-time
errors. These features provide full memory leak detection and performance
analysis for embedded software development.
A new integration between Rational Rose RealTime and Rational Test
RealTime, which became available in November 2001, provides execution coverage
reporting directly from UML models, creating a unique and powerful combination
of modeling and target-based testing. This integration offers embedded
developers the ability to test and perform run-time analysis at the
design-level, increasing user productivity and software quality.
In addition, a new integration between Rational Test RealTime and the
Rational(R) Team Unifying Platform, which was also made available in November
2001, extends team development to include full traceability between
requirements and test assets, ensuring that embedded teams can effectively
manage all aspects of their development process. This integration complements
the existing integration between Rational Rose RealTime and the Rational Team
Unifying Platform for team development with UML models.
Rational Rose RealTime and Rational Test RealTime now include easy-to-use
porting wizards that allow the tools to be integrated with any target
environment. This flexibility ensures that developers can work within their
embedded environment of choice.
"We're seeing a huge rise in demand for embedded software development
tools, and Rational is responding to this market need by announcing the
industry's first integrated lifecycle offering for embedded and real-time
software development," said Eric Schurr, senior vice president of marketing,
Rational Software. "Rational's embedded development solution provides
optimized integration and simplicity that liberates developers from
time-consuming activities that delay their development efforts. This allows
developers to create innovative embedded software while project teams meet
their goals."

solution are available at http://www.rational.com/news/embedded/index.jsp.
Rational Software will be exhibiting in booth #1618 at the Embedded
Systems Conference, March 12-15, 2002 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
Bran Selic, Principal Engineer, Rational, will be speaking at several sessions
during the event. For additional details, please visit
