Integration Benefits Joint Customers by Significantly Decreasing Testing Time
                       for Embedded Software Developers

    SAN FRANCISCO, March 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- At CMP's Embedded
Systems Conference, Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL) today announced that it
has teamed up with The MathWorks to streamline software testing for developers
using MathWorks Simulink(R) and Stateflow(R) products to design and generate
code for embedded software systems.
Rational(R) Test RealTime, Rational's complete solution for testing and
observing embedded, real-time and networked systems, is now integrated with
MathWorks model-based design products -- Simulink, Stateflow, Real-Time
Workshop(R), and Real-Time Workshop Embedded Coder -- for modeling,
simulating, analyzing, and generating code for embedded systems. Rational
Test RealTime was recently named the leading embedded test automation tool by
Venture Development Corporation, a leading independent market research firm.
The integration of Rational Test RealTime and MathWorks model-based design
products -- described in more detail at the MathWorks Web site,
http://www.mathworks.com/connections -- demonstrates Rational's commitment to
providing the most time-efficient software development solution for the
embedded market.
The integration translates Simulink/Stateflow simulation results into
Rational Test RealTime test cases that can be immediately applied to code
modules, including code created by MathWorks code-generation products. This
reuse of model information eliminates duplicated effort between control
engineering and software engineering teams. To reinforce the relationship,
Rational has become a member of MathWorks Connections Partner Program, and The
MathWorks has joined the Rational Unified Partner Program.
"Rational Test RealTime is a valuable, code-based test approach that
complements MathWorks model-based design approach by enabling the reuse of
existing design and simulation information from the modeling process to test
the application code generated by our products," said Jim Tung, Chief Market
Development Officer at The MathWorks. "This is a great example of how our
partners can take advantage of our open interfaces for the benefit of our user
community. With this interface to Rational Test RealTime, we are able to
provide embedded developers with additional testing capabilities that work
well with our products, enabling them to simplify workflow and accelerate
development."
The integration of Rational Test RealTime with the MathWorks framework is
part of Rational's Quality by Design initiative, which ensures high quality
software by allowing developers to continuously verify software quality
throughout the development process. The Quality by Design initiative makes it
easier to continuously detect and repair software problems -- from the first
design stage through product delivery.
"Rational is committed to providing our customers with a complete
development lifecycle solution for embedded, real-time, and networked
software," said Eric Schurr, senior vice president of marketing, Rational
Software. "By integrating Rational Test RealTime with the MathWorks
model-based design approach, we're liberating embedded developers by allowing
them to use simulation results for application testing to eliminate many of
the time-consuming processes associated with testing embedded solutions. The
end result is that organizations can reduce risk early in the development
lifecycle, trim development costs, and ultimately deliver higher quality
software faster."

solution are available at http://www.rational.com/news/embedded/index.jsp.
