emWare's Global Device Service Offers Low-Cost Method for Businesses To
Manage Intelligent Devices Deployed at Multiple Locations
SAN FRANCISCO, EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- As
part of its overall strategy to support networked intelligent devices on a
global basis, emWare, Inc. today announced the availability of its Global
Device Service. This new addition to emWare's emConnect(SM) remote device
management services provides businesses with global access to device
information. All that is needed is an emWare-enabled device and a local
dial-up connection to any Internet Service Provider (ISP). For businesses
that manage a fleet of devices installed at multiple locations -- everything
from vending machines and medical appliances to heating, ventilation and air
conditioning (HVAC) systems -- using the Global Device Service is a simple,
low-cost method to collect, analyze and manage their device information.
Having access to this valuable device information allows companies to hone
their existing business processes and reduce service costs.
In addition, because emWare hosts the Global Device Service, businesses
get an end-to-end remote device management solution without the usual resource
requirements or the high costs associated with developing a wide-area, or even
a global, device network communications infrastructure.
"emWare's Global Device Service is another example of how emWare is
enabling businesses in any industry to remotely connect, monitor and manage
virtually any device in their enterprise," said Michael D. Nelson, CEO and
co-founder of emWare. "The key here is that companies today are needlessly
spending money on rolling trucks to service equipment out in the field. By
deploying remote device management solutions, businesses can dramatically cut
service costs and return a tremendous amount of money to their bottom line."
How It Works
emWare's Point-to-Point (PPP) version of its emMicro(TM) software provides
the two-way communications necessary to link the device to emWare's Enterprise
Messaging Gateway (EMG(TM)). The EMG, which is at the heart of emWare's
emConnect Services, can then distribute the device information to a designated
client application virtually anywhere in the world. The client can be a Web
browser using Java objects, or a cell phone, PDA, database, spreadsheet or a
custom enterprise application.
The EMG, which is based on emWare's patent-pending, Embedded Micro
Internetworking Technology (EMIT(R)) device networking software, is a
Java-based, enterprise-level message-routing, directory and database system
that supports such industry standards as HTTPS, J2EE and L2TP (PPP). Using
standards-based networking hardware and software makes the EMG flexible,
stable, secure and fault tolerant.
For Example
As an example of how the Global Device Service could benefit a business,
consider a failing air conditioning system in a busy downtown office. If that
office's air conditioner is not networked-enabled with emWare's emMicro for
PPP software, the building maintenance contractor would have no access to the
air conditioner's device information, and therefore, no warning of impending
failure. That might mean many hours, or even days, of hot, frustrated
tenants. If the air conditioner were emWare-enabled, it could be programmed
to automatically notify the building's maintenance contractor of various
failure conditions by simply dialing into emWare's Global Device Service. A
service person could then be dispatched to make the repair -- with the needed
parts in hand -- before the failure occurs. As a result, the office's tenants
would never be afflicted with sweltering heat.
