Ongoing R&D, strategic acquisitions and geographic expansion in 2005 drive
unmatched momentum into 2006
ORLANDO, Fla., March 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Thermo Electron
Corporation (NYSE: TMO), the world leader in analytical instruments, today
unveiled its new laboratory solutions at the Pittsburgh Conference
(PITTCON(R)) in Orlando, Florida, the largest North American conference and
exposition on laboratory science and instrumentation. Along with several new
product launches, Thermo is showcasing its total range of laboratory
solutions, offering customers integrated technology and services from sample
preparation, to sample analysis through to data interpretation and storage.
Thermo will also show new solutions in its complete "lab to line" portfolio
for both Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and the European Restrictions on
Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive.
Marc Casper, senior vice president of Thermo commented, "At a time when
customers are striving for new levels of integration, sensitivity and
performance in their laboratories, our portfolio of solutions provides
customers an unmatched breadth of offerings from the most common to the most
complex applications."
Thermo's aggressive R&D resulted in several important new products for a
range of applications, most notably in mass spectrometry and elemental
analysis. The company spent nearly $1 billion on strategic acquisitions in
2005, including Kendro Laboratory Products for laboratory equipment, NITON for
in-the-field elemental analysis including key RoHS applications, as well as
Ionalytics for patent-protected life sciences technology. Thermo also
extended its global reach with the recent openings of customer demonstration
centers in China and India. These new initiatives, reinforced by Thermo's
ongoing technology and market leadership, bring more solutions and services
than ever to customers from the world leader in analytical instruments.
A complete list of products being unveiled at PITTCON can be found at
http://www.thermo.com/PITTCON. Among the solutions Thermo is highlighting
are:
* Elemental Analysis: The most sensitive inductively coupled plasma (ICP)
spectrometers available, the iCAP 6300 and iCAP 6500 will debut at
PITTCON. Thermo's iCAP 6000 series addresses increasing market demand
for more accurate ICP spectroscopy in elemental analysis laboratories
in the environmental, petrochemical, metal, food and beverage,
geo-chemical and cement industries. The compact iCAP 6000 series
enhances performance in quantifying trace elements in both solid and
liquid samples, meaning laboratories can achieve their analytical
objectives more quickly and accurately.
* Mass Spectrometry: The LTQ(TM) Orbitrap(TM) hybrid mass spectrometer for
small molecule and proteomics research builds on the success of the
Finnigan LTQ FT hybrid MS, and is the first totally new mass analyzer
to be introduced to the market in over 20 years. Also being shown for
the first time are the Finnigan(TM) LXQ(TM) Linear Ion Trap Mass
Spectrometer, which extends the Finnigan LTQ linear trap product line
for high-throughput drug discovery and proteomics; and the DFS High
Resolution GC-MS for high-precision environmental analysis.
* Near-Infrared (NIR) Analysis: With the launch of four new NIR systems,
Thermo extends its "lab to line" offerings and its capabilities in
Process Analytical Technology (PAT). For pharmaceutical manufacturing,
the Antaris(TM) II provides near-line QC/QA analysis of tablets, and
the new Antaris Target Blend Analyzer has been developed specifically
to monitor and control the blending process in real time. The new
Antaris MX allows for simultaneous measurement from multiple fiber
optic inputs for process control and is also optimized for raw material
analysis. The Antaris EX is designed and certified for on-line
analytics and control in hazardous manufacturing areas.
* Informatics: Darwin, the latest evolution in commercial-off-the-shelf
Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for pharmaceutical
development and quality control, is now commercially available. Darwin
LIMS is groundbreaking because the software provides users with a
significantly higher level of pharmaceutical functionality out of the
box. Darwin also has a shortened implementation time while it lessens
validation cost, minimizes challenges of upgrading and lowers the total
cost of ownership for customers.
* Laboratory Equipment: With the acquisition of Kendro Laboratory Products
complete, Thermo provides a total offering of sample preparation and
handling technologies. The company will be unveiling two new
centrifuge lines at PITTCON -- the Espresso personal microcentrifuge
and Sorvall RC-6 Plus High-speed floor model centrifuge to add to
Thermo's complete offering of innovative centrifugation technology.
Thermo was also recently named "2005 Company of the Year" by Instrument
Business Outlook (IBO). The award recognized Thermo Electron's market
leadership, strong financial and operational performance and outstanding
technical contributions to the analytical and scientific instrumentation
market in 2005. The award credits Thermo with successfully meeting the
evolving demands of the life science industry through its strategic
investments in services and lab equipment, the expansion of its mass
spectrometry portfolio and refined strategy targeted at emerging markets. The
