ORLANDO, Fla., March 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Varian, Inc.
(Nasdaq: VARI) today announced that it has received an order for the world's
first commercially available gas chromatograph/Fourier Transform mass
spectrometer (GC/FTMS). This unparalleled product offering is the immediate
result of the company's acquisition of IonSpec Corporation in February 2006.
The GC/FTMS interfaces a Varian GC with a high performance FTMS, which
will provide researchers in environmental laboratories unprecedented
structural elucidation and quantitation of environmental contaminants. FTMS
offers the most accurate mass determination and the highest possible
resolution of any type of MS instrument available today. Its combination with
a GC instrument enables analysis of extremely complex mixtures that are often
found in environmental samples and physiological fluids.
"We are excited about the introduction of the GC/FTMS because it
symbolizes a significant advance in the ability of an instrument to deliver
unprecedented resolution and accurate mass measurement for the positive
identification of contaminants in the environment," said Martin O'Donoghue,
senior vice president of Scientific Instruments, Varian, Inc. "We also
believe that this unique combination of technologies may be useful in life
sciences applications as well."
Orders are being accepted now for the new GC/FTMS system with delivery
scheduled in approximately three months.
Part of Varian, Inc.'s strategy is to strengthen the company's IRD product
portfolio, which provides users with multi-dimensional layers of knowledge
critical to their ability to optimize analyses and processes. These products
include nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging,
mass spectrometry (MS) and Fourier Transform- infrared (FT-IR) systems.
