Tube Compensation Software Is Enhancement to Puritan-Bennett(R) 840(TM)
Ventilator
ST. LOUIS, March 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG) said
today that a new Tube Compensation (TC) software option to its
Puritan-Bennett 840 Ventilator is designed to provide improvement to
spontaneous breathing through an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube and result
in greater comfort for the ventilator patient.
"Our new Tube Compensation software option represents a significant
advancement in spontaneous breathing through an artificial airway for patients
on ventilatory support," said Steve Tunnell, director of marketing for
Mallinckrodt's ventilation business. "We recognize that setting adequate
pressure support to compensate for the endotracheal tube has been a
long-standing problem for clinicians, and we are excited to offer a solution
that will help this concern."
Tunnell referred specifically to articles by several industry leaders that
have been published in Technology and Health Care 1994 (1:281-291) and
Intensive Care Medicine 1999 (25:514-519) which address the situation of
resistance caused by the endotracheal (ET) or tracheostomy (trach) tube, long
recognized as the single greatest cause of imposed work of breathing (WOB) in
the mechanically ventilated patient.
He explained that with the tube compensation software, a positive pressure
is delivered to the patient that is proportional to the inspiratory flow and
internal diameter of the endotracheal or tracheostomy tube, thus assisting
with the patient's spontaneous breathing. The result is that the patient does
not have to experience the resistive work caused by the artificial airway.
This is particularly important in individuals with poorly functioning
respiratory systems who must exert even greater muscular effort to overcome
the increased resistance to flow through the artificial airway.
"From a clinical perspective," Tunnell said, "TC is easy to operate and
takes the guesswork out of setting pressure support to compensate for the ET
tube. Clinicians simply tell the ventilator what size ET or trach tube is in
place and the ventilator automatically calculates the correct level of
support. As flow varies, the 840 ventilator calculates the amount of pressure
needed to maintain a zero pressure drop across the tube."
