DETROIT, March 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit Mayor Dennis W. Archer and Ralph
W. Babb Jr., vice chairman and chief financial officer, Comerica Incorporated,
today announced plans for H.U.G. Belle Isle, the first broad-based community
cleanup of Belle Isle.
Comerica is the primary sponsor of the H.U.G. -- Help Uncover The Gem --
cleanup, which will take place Saturday, May 5. An estimated 2,000 volunteers
are needed to clean the 982-acre island park.
"It is going to take an ongoing, community-wide effort to revitalize Belle
Isle and keep it clean. This is why Comerica is stepping up to the plate to
do something about it," Babb said. "Comerica is proud to be the primary
sponsor of H.U.G. Belle Isle, particularly as our hometown city celebrates its
300-year anniversary."
A recruitment drive has been launched targeting individuals, community
groups, church members, business leaders and media outlets throughout
metropolitan Detroit. Belle Isle attracts 8 million visitors annually.
"Our focus is squarely on Belle Isle's future, and its future depends on
all of us taking an active role in the island's maintenance and clean-up,"
Babb said.
H.U.G. Belle Isle volunteers will be assigned to clean and refurbish one
of eight designated sectors on the island. The goal of the entire cleanup
area includes cleaning, painting and refurbishing more than 380 picnic tables,
10 picnic shelters, seven canals and more than five miles of shoreline length.
