VIENNA, Va., March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- GRC International (NYSE: GRH) has
received $2.4 million in additional funding to continue development of new
technology that will be used in an advanced anti-tank round. The round, which
is a candidate for the Army's next generation ammunition for its main battle
tank, is being developed under the Advanced Kinetic Energy Projectile Program
for the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development, and Engineering Center
(ARDEC). In December ARDEC selected GRCI over a competing Alliant Technology
concept. This award raises the total value of the cost plus fixed fee
contract to $6.75 million.
Awarded a prime contract by ARDEC in late 1994 to explore the feasibility
of this new technology, GRCI has successfully completed a series of full-scale
technology demonstrations conducted at the Army Proving Grounds in Yuma, Ariz.
Design optimization will continue over the next two years concluding with a
full-scale concept demonstration in FY2001. Subcontractors to GRCI include
AAI Corporation and Primex Technologies.
GRCI President and CEO Gary Denman said, "The evolution of this technology
will ensure that the Army will have the capability to defeat current and
future advanced explosive reactive tank armors. This work has significant
implications for the future of tank warfighting. Upon the Army's commitment
to our concept, we could see two to three more years of funding to develop the
munitions, prior to the Army taking the concept into engineering,
manufacturing, and development."
GRCI's work in the armor/anti-armor arena began in 1984 with research
programs funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to
study the penetration mechanics of advanced projectile concepts. This work
then matured into the development of advanced projectile technologies that
could be incorporated into weapons.
