FISHERS, Ind., March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Sallie Mae, the nation's
leading provider of saving- and paying-for-college programs, today
announced that charitable contributions of employees and The Sallie Mae
Fund's matching gift to United Way of Central Indiana totaled nearly
$670,000 in 2006, making Sallie Mae the single largest contributor in
Hamilton County and placing the company among the three largest fundraisers
for United Way in Central Indiana. Sallie Mae's United Way campaign to
engage employees this year was so successful that the United Way of
Hamilton County plans to use it as a model in the future to work with area
CEOs to help increase giving at their own companies.

"Sallie Mae and its employees are valued partners when it comes to the
mission of addressing today's needs and reducing tomorrow's," said Ellen K.
Annala, United Way of Central Indiana's president and chief executive
officer. "They were determined to exceed their already generous giving rank
in the 2005 workplace campaign, and made it happen. As a result, the spot
they earned in 2006 played a key role in helping put our entire campaign on
a path to sustained growth."
Surpassing initial contribution goals, Sallie Mae exceeded its prior
year employee participation goals, with 85 percent of the company's Fishers
workforce participating in the 2006 campaign. Participation and
contributions at the officer level also rose in 2006, increasing by
$35,000. The Sallie Mae Fund, a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie
Mae, provided a $240,000 matching grant to the efforts.
"Year after year, the United Way of Central Indiana does an outstanding
job in improving the lives of families in Central Indiana," said June M.
McCormack, executive vice president, Sallie Mae. "Sallie Mae is pleased to
be part of this important effort and to support an organization that is
making such a critical difference in our Hoosier state."
In addition to the United Way campaign, Sallie Mae-Fishers supported
several other charitable-giving efforts in 2006, including the Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. More than $38,000 was raised by Sallie
Mae employees for the walk, making the company the No. 1 Flagship Sponsor
for the second year in a row.
