Mobil Canada Honoured As Environmental Leader

    CALGARY, Alberta, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Canada's Voluntary Challenge
and Registry Inc. (VCR) recently honoured Mobil Canada with a 1999 Leadership
Award for the Upstream Oil and Gas sector at a ceremony in Hull, Quebec, for
its voluntary efforts to promote energy efficiency.
Mobil Canada, which is wholly-owned by Exxon Mobil Corporation of Irving,
Texas, was recognized for its initiatives in numerous areas, including
developing a management system for its environmental programs and establishing
a comprehensive system for measuring emissions at each facility. The company
was also acknowledged for reducing approximately 35,000 tonnes of C02-
equivalent emissions from actions undertaken in 1998 alone.
"I am pleased to accept this award on behalf of Mobil Canada's 950
employees," said Jerry Anderson, Production Manager, Mobil Canada. "As a
company, we are taking many practical, economic steps to use energy resources
more efficiently and maintain safe and reliable operations.
"We know that using energy resources efficiently, applying the right
technology and operating in a safe and responsible manner are effective ways
to reduce emissions at our facilities. We believe that this approach will
allow us both to protect our environment and to sustain economic prosperity."
Candidates for the 1999 Leadership Awards were drawn from registered plans
submitted to VCR. VCR's Technical Advisory Committee, which consists of 24
representatives from academia, environmental non-government organizations,
industry and governments, developed the selection criteria for the awards and
also provided the judging panel for the 1999 awards program.
Mobil Canada is one of more than 950 organizations registered with VCR.
In addition, Mobil Canada is a member of the Canadian Association of Petroleum
Producers Environmental, Health & Safety Stewardship program, which has helped
industry establish environment, health and safety principles and guidelines.
