Jewel-Osco Sponsors Blood-Glucose Testing for Second Consecutive Year
MELROSE PARK, Ill., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Fighting diabetes in the
communities it serves, Jewel-Osco stores are offering free blood-glucose
testing to anyone who believes they may be at risk to the disease.
With March 23 designated as diabetes alert day by the American Diabetes
Association, more than 100 Jewel-Osco stores (please see attached list of
Chicagoland locations) will provide the free blood-glucose testing on
March 23-24, between 3 and 7 p.m., in an area near the store pharmacy.
A simple, quick, and painless procedure administered by a health care
professional, blood-glucose test results are ready in about 10 minutes and can
provide valuable information for use in diagnosing, managing, and treating the
disease.
Nearly 17 million people in the United States have diabetes, yet more than
half of those do not know that they have the disease which left untreated can
result in devastating health problems including kidney failure, eye disease,
limb amputations, and coronary failure, according to the US Center for Disease
Control.
Osco Drug Vice President of Pharmacy Operations, Gerry Bay, said the free
blood-glucose tests are designed to increase awareness of diabetes, and
encourage those who believe they may be at risk to the disease to seek a
treatment program.
"Osco Drug pharmacists understand the importance of a comprehensive
health-care program for people with diabetes," Bay said. "Each time a person
with diabetes visits a Jewel-Osco, they can rely on people who care to answer
questions and fill special requests to help them treat the disease."
According to information provided by the American Diabetes Association
(ADA), a person has a higher risk of contracting diabetes if they are:
overweight; 45-years of age or older; African-American, Native-American,
Asian-American, Pacific-Islander, Hispanic, or Latino; from a family with a
history of diabetes; suffering from high-blood pressure at or above 140 over
90.
Most people with diabetes do not have symptoms. However, people
experiencing extreme thirst, frequent urination and unexplained weight loss
should contact a health care professional immediately, according to the ADA.
