Richard Leweke Joins Providian Financial as Head of Human Resources

    SAN FRANCISCO, March 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Providian Financial Corporation (NYSE: PVN) today announced the appointment of
Richard Leweke as Vice Chairman and Chief Human Resources Officer.  Leweke
joins Providian from California Federal Bank, where he served as Executive
Vice President of Human Resources and Administrative Services and was part of
the management team that developed and executed the bank's successful growth
strategy.  He replaces John Rogers, who recently announced his retirement.  "I
am very pleased that Rick has chosen to join Providian as we continue the
rebuilding process," said Joseph Saunders, chairman and chief executive
officer.  "And I am extremely grateful for the service John Rogers has
provided during his many years with the Company.  We wish him well with his
retirement."
    Also recently joining the Company is Grisel Kaplan as Chief Compliance
Officer.  Kaplan joins Providian with 20 years of experience in the banking
compliance arena, most recently at Citigroup, where she led that company's
information technology compliance efforts. Kaplan is the author of several
articles on compliance and regulatory issues.
    The Company also announced that James Jones, vice chairman of Enterprise
Risk Management, is stepping down to pursue other interests.  Ellen Richey has
been named Vice Chairman of Enterprise Risk Management, in additional to her
responsibilities as general counsel and secretary, and will assume overall
responsibility for the enterprise risk function.  Mr. Jones has agreed to
remain with Providian on an interim basis to assist with the transition.
