LOS ANGELES, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Food 4 Less and Pepsi have partnered
to raise $25,000 to benefit the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)
America program.
The funds were raised through a unique in-store promotion held at all
Southern California Food 4 Less stores during Red Ribbon Week, an annual
educational campaign designed to protect children from the dangers of alcohol,
tobacco and other drugs. Throughout the month of October 2001, Food 4 Less
customers helped raise money for D.A.R.E. by purchasing selected Pepsi
products.
Bette Foley, assistant district manager for Food 4 Less, and Gus
Golembiewski from Pepsi Bottling Group, will present the $25,000 donation at a
check presentation ceremony on Wednesday, March 20 at 10:00 a.m. at the Food 4
Less store at 5420 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. The funds will be presented
to Glenn Levant, president and founding director of D.A.R.E. America and a
retired Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief.
"Food 4 Less and Pepsi are both committed to making a difference in our
communities," said Food 4 Less President Dave Hirz. "We want to help build
awareness for the D.A.R.E. program and the great work it has done in educating
our children about the dangers of drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse. By making
this donation to D.A.R.E. America, we are reinforcing our commitment to
enhancing the lives of young people in the communities our stores serve. We
also want to encourage our customers to continue to support this important
cause."
Food 4 Less' support of D.A.R.E. is in keeping with its tradition of
supporting community-minded projects. Food 4 Less stores have a reputation
for being actively involved in the communities they serve by supporting
organizations focused on health, education, the fight against hunger, and
developing our youth.
"At Food 4 Less, we believe we have a special obligation to give back to
the communities where we do business," Hirz said.
Food 4 Less gives more than $2 million annually to hundreds of nonprofit
organizations benefiting thousands of people in need of assistance.
D.A.R.E. America will use the donation to help fund its programs to teach
children about drugs and gangs.
"We at D.A.R.E. America are grateful to Food 4 Less and Pepsi for their
generosity and support," Levant said. "This donation will make a significant
difference in the lives of many children as we use the funds to continue
D.A.R.E.'s efforts to educate children about the dangers of drug abuse."
Founded in 1983 by the Los Angeles Police Department, D.A.R.E. is a
worldwide educational partnership between schools and local law enforcement
agencies designed to prevent substance abuse and violence by teaching
school-age children about the consequences associated with drugs, gangs and
violence. Each year, D.A.R.E. educates millions of children on how to say
"no" to drugs and gangs.
