NASA Contractor Manages Complex Security Requirements In Remote Facilities
WASHINGTON, and PALO ALTO, Calif., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- At FOSE today,
VMware, Inc., the leading provider of virtual computing software for
Intel-based computers, announced that Lockheed Martin Space Operations has
deployed VMware Workstation and GSX Server at its Prairie View A&M Storefront
facility.
"VMware offered an effective solution to minimize hardware and
infrastructure costs," said Nancy Patterson, engineering director for the
Consolidated Space Operations Contract (CSOC) at NASA Johnson Space Center.
"Not only could we buy fewer machines, we could also minimize physical network
connections while managing our complicated security requirements."
Lockheed, as part of the $3 billion+ contract with NASA, is responsible
for providing end-to-end space operations support for NASA missions, including
the Space Shuttle and International Space Station, mission operations and
planning systems design, development, and integration. To minimize costs,
Lockheed has implemented a "Storefront" program to set up facilities on or
near selected university campuses where students are hired to perform software
engineering and other related work under the supervision of CSOC.
"We had to maintain NASA's high security standards, which required a setup
to handle unclassified sensitive and classified activities," said Bill Smith,
project engineer at CSOC. "VMware products allowed us to do this and assisted
us in getting the Storefront up and running rapidly and in a cost-effective
manner."
The Prairie View A&M Storefront, the first of CSOC's Storefront
facilities, provides support for the maintenance of approximately 6.5 million
lines of code currently being sustained by the CSOC Software Engineering
organization in Houston. The Prairie View Storefront facility uses VMware
Workstation to run three configurations, each with a different operating
system and security setup, on every workstation. To maintain user rights and
tools configurations, Lockheed uses VMware GSX Server, software that logically
partitions server resources for server consolidation, capacity planning and
rapid provisioning.
