FOSE Rolls Out the Green Carpet for 'Green Computing'

White House Officials to Explain New Green Computer Requirement and Thank
Manufacturers for Supplying EPEAT-Registered Green Computers

WASHINGTON, March 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- President Bush is
requiring all federal agencies to buy EPEAT-registered green computers.
Overnight President Bush turned what was once a fringe tree-hugging hippie
concept into official government policy. White House officials have chosen
the FOSE 2007 conference, the nation's largest gathering of government
information and technology professionals, as the first public forum to
explain President Bush's new green computer requirements and to recognize
manufacturers for making EPEAT-registered green computers available. The
Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tools (EPEAT) helps
institutional purchasers in the public and private sectors evaluate,
compare and select desktop computers, notebooks, and monitors based on
their environmental attributes using the IEEE 1680 Standard. FOSE 2007 will
take place on Tuesday-Thursday, March 20-22 at the Washington DC Convention
Center.
More than 15,000 federal high tech buyers, many of whom are already
specifying EPEAT-registered computers, will attend FOSE 2007. Registration
is free for military, government, government contractors and educators at
http://www.fose.com or by calling 1-800-791-FOSE.
"We're pleased that the White House has selected the 31st annual FOSE
conference as the forum to recognize the green computer manufacturers, many
of them FOSE exhibitors, who have chosen to help protect the environment,"
said Bill Howell, vice president and General Manager of FOSE. "President
Bush's executive order will have a sweeping impact on our government's
environmental stewardship. Already, $42 billion in Federal contracts
reference the EPEAT standard. Over the next four years, government's use of
green computers is expected to skyrocket."
According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates, the EPEAT-
registered green computers bought by the federal government over the next
four years will save enough energy to power 72,630 households, saving $71.4
million in energy costs. They will also reduce toxic material use by 75.1
metric tons and reduce hazardous waste by 2,820 metric tons.
    Green Computer Events at FOSE:
-- Live Radio Broadcast: Host John Gilroy of Federal News Radio's Federal
Tech Talk will interview Rick Goss, Environmental Relations, Electronic
Industry Association, and Scot Case, EPEAT Customer Services and
Relations Manager, Green Electronics Council live from the FOSE
convention floor. The live broadcast runs from 2:00 to 2:30 on
Wednesday, March 21 in the FOSE Radio Station, Booth 2254.
-- White House EPEAT Recognition Ceremony: Senior White House officials
will explain President Bush's new executive order requiring federal
agencies to buy EPEAT-registered green computers. They will also
publicly thank manufacturers for making EPEAT-registered green
computers available to the federal market. The ceremony takes place
2:30 to 3:00 PM on Wednesday, March 21 in the FOSE Press Conference
       Room, Booth 1246.
-- EPEAT Panel: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency personnel and
industry representatives will explain the financial and environmental
benefits of EPEAT-registered products. Panelists include Holly Elwood,
EPEAT Program Manager, Environmental Protection Agency, Bill McGovern,
Environmental and Safety Manager, Department of Homeland Security, and
Rick Goss, Environmental Relations, Electronic Industry Association.
The panel discussion takes place from 3:15 to 4:00 PM on Wednesday,
March 21, in the FOSE Government Business Practices Pavilion, Booth
       1237.

    EPEAT "Green" Computers
Compared to traditional computer equipment, all EPEAT-registered green
computers have reduced levels of cadmium, lead, and mercury to better
protect human health and the environment. They are more energy efficient,
which reduces emissions of climate changing greenhouse gases. They are also
easier to upgrade and recycle.
EPEAT products are identified as EPEAT-Bronze, EPEAT-Silver, or
EPEAT-Gold depending on the number of environmental features incorporated
into the product. A list of the almost 400 EPEAT-registered products from
15 manufacturers and additional details is available online at
http://www.epeat.net.
