BALTIMORE, March 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Constellation Energy
(NYSE: CEG) today announced that its Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in
Lusby, Md. completed its scheduled Unit 1 refueling outage at 12:48 p.m.,
March 13, 2008. The outage duration was 19 days, 15 hours -- the shortest
duration ever for a Calvert Cliffs unit. It is also the shortest duration
for any Combustion Engineering Plant.
"The completion of this outage is an investment in generation
reliability, as well as part of our commitment to continued safe
operation," said Jim Spina, vice president of Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power
Plant. "Years of planning and preparation went into this effort. It is a
milestone achievement for the site, and I am extremely proud of how well
our employees performed in meeting this record breaking outage."
In addition to standard refueling activities, plant staff replaced and
inspected systems and equipment as a proactive measure to ensure continued
equipment reliability through the remainder of Unit 1's operating license,
which expires in 2034.
Since Unit 1's previous refueling in 2006, the unit has produced an
energy-equivalent of 624 days at full power and operated at a capacity
factor of approximately 91.5%, representing a new record in energy output
for an operating cycle at Calvert Cliffs.
Constellation Energy owns and operates the Calvert Cliffs facility. The
output of electricity from the site's two operating units is enough to meet
the needs of more than a half-million homes, or about 20 percent of all
Maryland residents. In 2000, Calvert Cliffs became the first nuclear power
plant in the nation to earn extended licenses from the U.S. Nuclear
Regulatory Commission -- through 2034 for Unit 1 and through 2036 for Unit
2.
Constellation Energy (http://www.constellation.com), a FORTUNE 125
company with 2007 revenues of $21 billion, is the nation's largest
competitive supplier of electricity to large commercial and industrial
customers and the nation's largest wholesale power seller. Constellation
Energy also manages fuels and energy services on behalf of energy intensive
industries and utilities. It owns a diversified fleet of 78 generating
units located throughout the United States, totaling approximately 8,700
megawatts of generating capacity. The company delivers electricity and
natural gas through the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE), its
