PITTSBURGH, March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Beginning Thursday, March 21, 2002
motorists can view traffic images from PENNDOT's traffic cameras on
epenndot.com.
"We've focused on customer needs during our information systems planning
on this project," said Ray Hack, PENNDOT district engineer. "Motorists now
can focus on images from our cameras just like the morning and afternoon
traffic reporters in the PENNDOT Information Center."
The cameras are the ultimate anytime convenience for motorists with
Internet access. "Motorists told us they thought it would be a good idea to
have the cameras on our website and we agreed," said Dick Skrinjar PENNDOT
information officer. "It helps drivers make a better decision about where and
when to go whether they're checking it at work or before they leave home."
A PENNDOT survey taken last year by epenndot.com indicated 97% of the
motorists would continue to use their cars during the closing of the Fort Pitt
Bridge and Tunnel, choosing one of the posted alternate routes and changing
their commuting schedule. The camera picture on-line, along with radio
traffic reports from PENNDOT's Information Center, provide the most
authoritative and reliable source of traffic conditions in the Pittsburgh
area.
The cameras update themselves every 60 seconds and provide views of the
following roadways:
West Region
-- I-279 Fort Pitt Tunnels Garage - Southbound
-- I-279 Green Tree Hill Middle - Northbound
-- I-279 Green Tree Hill Top - Southbound
-- I-279 Carnegie Interchange - Northbound
