New design results in lower costs for commercial customers
TROY, Mich., March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Delphi Corp. has introduced a new
satellite radio for the heavy-duty market based on research and feedback of
commercial vehicle users. The new premium CD/MP3 radio with an integrated
satellite receiver features robust, digital-quality audio in a compact package
at a very competitive cost.

"We went directly to professional operators to learn their special
preferences for the radio in their vehicles," said Ken Erickson, Delphi
Integrated Media Systems business line executive. "We wanted to get feedback
from the end-users of this product to get customer driven direction on the
design. We believe that this 'common sense approach' to design is going to
make this a very popular radio in that market."
To achieve high quality and strong longevity, the single DIN premium
CD/MP3 radio is durably designed and SAE J1455 compliant for rugged use in the
harsh environment of commercial and off-highway vehicles. All of the
materials and components for the radio were carefully selected for maximum
resistance to wear. Display lighting is achieved through LED backlighting to
extend the display life. In addition, the new radio eliminates the need for a
remote satellite receiver, brackets and wiring harness for satellite radio.
Delphi's critical sourcing and world-class assembly methods in producing
radios adds to the overall value and quality for commercial vehicle makers.
"Our design engineers worked with suppliers to accomplish a very
significant mass reduction and consequent cost reduction in the radio," said
Erickson. "It allows us to pass these valuable savings on to our customers."
The new radio features larger more ergonomically friendly controls
including knobs, buttons and a 2 X 16 dot matrix display that provides two
lines each with 16 alphanumeric data characters for improved data quality. It
can be equipped with digital satellite radio reception from either of the two
North American satellite radio companies. The digital tuner provides crisp,
high-quality sound. These features are in addition to AM/FM stereo with 7-
channel NOAA weather band and CD/MP3 playback. It can also play and charge an
iPod at the same time. The radio even has an alarm clock with snooze
function.
