DALLAS, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) will
address the Press Club of Dallas Wednesday, March 30, on the importance of
openness in government and will highlight his two bipartisan bills to increase
public's access to information.
Sen. Cornyn has sponsored two bipartisan bills to reform the Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA) and increase the public's access to information.
Sen. Cornyn introduced the bipartisan Openness Promotes Effectiveness in
our National Government Act of 2005 (OPEN Government Act, S. 394) in February
which is aimed at substantially enhancing and expanding the accessibility,
accountability, and openness of the federal government.
The legislation is supported by groups from across the political spectrum.

Earlier this month, Sen. Cornyn introduced another bipartisan bill, the
Faster FOIA Act (S. 589), to establish an advisory Commission on Freedom of
Information Act Processing Delays. The 16-member commission would be charged
with reporting to Congress and the President its recommendations for steps
that should be taken to reduce delays in the processing of requests under
FOIA. The Faster FOIA Act passed the Senate unanimously on March 17.
Sen. Cornyn chaired a hearing on March 15 to examine the OPEN Government
Act in the Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and
Homeland Security.
