New Java(TM) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM)) Application verification Tool and Beta Program to Enhance Application Portability

SAN FRANCISCO, JavaOne(SM) Developer Conference, March 26
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) announced
today availability of the Java(TM) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition(J2EE(TM))
Application Verification Kit (AVK). The new tool is designed to help
developers make sure that applications running on a J2EE-based application
server work across different implementations of J2EE-based servers. This will
reduce application migration costs for developers and help customers that want
to run a single application across their existing array of application
servers.
"In order for developers to extend the reach of their solutions they need
to make sure their offerings run on as many application servers as possible,"
said Tracey Stout, Vice President, Marketing Java and XML Software, Sun
Microsystems, Inc. "The J2EE AVK will shorten the development time required
to make an application run across multiple application servers allowing
developers to focus on improving functionality."
Sun is supplying a J2EE Application Verification Kit and a beta program
for developers who want to test their applications with the new tool. The
J2EE AVK consists of binary tools such as a static code tool, the instrumented
J2EE reference implementation, a reporting tool and supporting documentation.
The kit is available immediately from Sun's web site at
http://java.sun.com/j2ee/avk/ .
The AVK helps analyze J2EE applications to identify platform specific code
use as well as violations of the J2EE specification. The report tool that is
included in the kit generates detailed logs that can be used to pinpoint these
problem areas.
Sun's J2EE AVK beta program has been met with enthusiasm by the developer
community. Companies such as Chordiant, Curious Networks, divine, and
Flashline are among the J2EE AVK beta program participants whose applications
have successfully passed the verification tests for application portability.
Sun's sample applications Java Pet Store and Java Smart Ticket have also
passed the verification criteria for application portability. Additionally,
leading software vendors such as Artesia Technologies, Blue Martini,
Comergent, Flashline, Informatica Corporation, IONA, IPI Corp, HP, Mongoose,
ObjectFX Corporation, Ohio Edge, Oracle, SilverStream, Sybase, and The
Middleware Company have started to use this tool that takes ambiguities out of
the process of developing portable J2EE-based applications.
