Thomas W. Burke, MD, Elected 40th President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists

    CHICAGO, March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Thomas W. Burke, MD, Executive Vice
President and Physician-in-Chief at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson
Cancer Center, has been elected the 40th President of the Society of
Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO) at the organization's 39th Annual Meeting,
held March 9-12, 2008 in Tampa, Florida.

    Dr. Burke received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Tulane
University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He served both his internship and
residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology at Tripler Army Medical Center in
Honolulu, Hawaii, followed by a two-year fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology
at Walter Reed Army Medical Center/Bethesda Naval Medical Center in
Washington, DC.

    Joining M.D. Anderson in 1988, Dr. Burke is responsible for oversight
and strategic planning for patient care delivery throughout the hospital,
clinics and outreach programs. Committed to clinical excellence, Dr.
Burke's major goal is to enhance patient services through increased
efficiency of human, fiscal and space resources.

    A noted clinical researcher, Dr. Burke's focus has been on vulvar and
endometrial cancers. His work has been instrumental in developing
conservative surgical options for women with vulvar cancer, including
lymphatic mapping, surgical reconstruction and combined modality therapy
for advance tumors. His interest in uterine cancers has involved surgical
staging procedures, adjuvant chemotherapy, treatment of recurrent disease
and management of high-risk groups; and he currently leads M.D. Anderson's
Uterine Cancer SPORE grant team.

    Dr. Burke has written and contributed to chapters on vulvar and
endometrial cancers for several textbooks and has authored and co-authored
more than 130 original medical articles. He is a reviewer and editorial
board member for several medical journals including Gynecologic Oncology,
Cancer, Annual of Surgical Oncology, American Journal of Obstetrics and
Gynecology and Lancet among others. In addition to SGO, Dr. Burke is also a
member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the
American College of Surgeons, the Felix Rutledge Society and the American
Society of Clinical Oncology. He has been recognized not only for his
clinical and educational activities but also for his national and
international presentations on gynecologic cancers, and has received
several teaching awards and nominations to Woodward and White's "Best
Doctors in America" and Good Housekeeping's "Best Doctor's for Women." In
addition, Dr. Burke is Board Certified by American Board of Obstetrics and
Gynecology.

    The SGO is a national medical specialty organization of physicians who
are trained in the comprehensive management of women with malignancies of
the reproductive tract. Its purpose is to improve the care of women with
gynecologic cancer by encouraging research, disseminating knowledge which
will raise the standards of practice in the prevention and treatment of
gynecologic malignancies, and cooperating with other organizations
interested in women's health care, oncology and related fields. The
Society's membership, totaling more than 1230, is primarily comprised of
gynecologic oncologists, as well as other related medical specialists
including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and pathologists. SGO
