Rescentris extends LabBook Software to the next generation
COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Omeris, the bioscience-focused
Ohio Edison Center, today announced the formation of a new central Ohio
company, Rescentris, Ltd. Rescentris provides a variety of information
management solutions for data-intensive life science research and development.
The company was formed by former executives, scientists, and software
developers from LabBook, Inc., including the architects of Bioinformatic
Sequence Markup Language(TM) (BSML) and the LabBook software.
Rescentris has licensed all of LabBook's products and technologies to
expand its business built around BSML, bioinformatics, and knowledge
management for life sciences research. According to company co-founder and CEO
Dr. Adel Mikhail, Rescentris also has assumed many key business relationships
and client accounts initiated by LabBook, including Fujitsu, Itochu, the State
of Ohio, and a number of pharmaceutical companies. The other founders of
Rescentris are Dr. Joseph Spitzner, CTO, and Dr. Jeff Spitzner, CSO, who are
the principal developers of BSML, a widely used XML standard for
bioinformatics since 1997.
Rescentris will continue development and distribution of LabBook software
products and technologies such as the eLabBook electronic laboratory notebook
and the BSML standard. However, Rescentris has developed a strategy in
response to recent changes in the marketplace for life sciences IT systems.
"As the bioinformatics market has matured and become more critical to drug
discovery and biomedical research efforts, the industry has recognized that
stand-alone products are not sufficient to meet their needs," stated Dr. Jeff
Spitzner. "Instead, bioinformatics and information management systems must be
fully integrated into R&D information pipelines. At the same time, the
industry transition from paper to electronic record keeping requires capturing
the science, not just the documents. That's where Rescentris can deliver
value."
Rescentris also announced today the release of its new bioinformatics
software, the Genomic Workspace(TM). This pure Java, cross-platform BSML
application provides life scientists with a visual and interactive environment
that enables collaborative annotation and integration of genomic and proteomic
information. The system can be used alone, in conjunction with public or third
party tools and databases, or as extended through customization by Rescentris
and its partners. Rescentris also released the Genomic Workspace Viewer, a
free, fully functional reader that makes the BSML 3.1 data standard accessible
to anyone.
The new company's business model entails working with its strategic
partners to deliver complete information solutions and services for the life
sciences community. These solutions are based in part on customization of
LabBook software components and semantic data models such as BSML, which help
to unify internal, third party, and public content in a common R&D information
framework. Rescentris also will work with global partners such as Fujitsu and
ITOCHU of Japan to deliver and support software and solutions worldwide.
Omeris, a nonprofit organization charged with accelerating biosciences
research and industry among Ohio's public and private sectors, helped
Rescentris develop their restructuring and finance strategy. According to
Omeris President Anthony Dennis, PhD, they will continue to help Rescentris
with implementation of that strategy. "The opportunity to introduce a growing
company like Rescentris to the life sciences community is another positive
step toward achieving our organization's goal of generating jobs, wealth, and
health for Ohio and Ohioans," commented Dennis.
"Simply put," stated Mikhail, "Omeris was critical to the formation of
Rescentris and keeping both the company and LabBook technology in Ohio."
