Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel Traffic Updates

    PITTSBURGH, March 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel
traffic updates from the Trumbull Corporation for the week of April 1, 2002
are summarized below.

    Beginning at 12:01 am on April 6, 2002 the Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel
will close.
    The following alternate routes will be put in place the week of April 1,
2002 weather permitting and any unforeseen difficulties.

    April 1 through April 8, 2002 (10 pm to 6 am)
    Motorists will encounter the following changes in traffic patterns on:

      INTERSTATE 279 SOUTH (PARKWAY NORTH)
      INTERSTATE 376 WEST (PARKWAY EAST)
      ROUTE 65 (OHIO RIVER BOULEVARD)
      BOULEVARD OF THE ALLIES

    Beginning at 10 pm, Monday, April 1, motorists will encounter single lane
traffic patterns throughout the routes mentioned above while construction
crews cover, remove and install new overhead signs in preparation for the Fort
Pitt Bridge and Tunnel closure.
    This work will conclude on Monday, April 8, at 6 am

    April 3, 2002 (10 pm to 6 am)
    Motorists will encounter a right-lane closure along the Boulevard of the
Allies from the Bluff Street exit to the Liberty Bridge/Crosstown exits as
contractors pave new curb.  Motorists may experience delays when accessing the
Crosstown Boulevard.


                             DETOURS AND CLOSURES

    The following detours and closures will be implemented from March 29
through April 6, 2002.  In addition to the detours mentioned, motorists are
encouraged to follow the posted detour routes.

    March 29 work begins at 10 pm:
    Closure of the following turns in the vicinity of the Liberty Interchange
and Route 51 North and South from Bausman Street to Crane Avenue.

    1. Route 51 Southbound traffic to the Liberty Tunnel
    This ramp is closed; however, it will serve as a circulation loop to Route
51 north.  Route 51 southbound traffic heading to downtown Pittsburgh will
detour around the circulation loop to Route 51 north, to the Banksville Loop,
and follow Interstate 279 north through the Fort Pitt Tunnels.  Motorists may
also continue on Route 51 north to the West End Circle and follow West Carson
Street (Route 837) eastbound to the Fort Pitt Bridge.

    West Liberty Avenue traffic to Route 51 North
    Traffic is detoured through the Liberty Tunnels across the Liberty Bridge
to the 6th Avenue exit.  At this exit, turn right onto Forbes Avenue; go
through the Armstrong Tunnel and cross the 10th Street Bridge to West Carson
Street (Route 837 north).  Travel through the Southside to Route 51 North at
the West End Circle.

    2. Intersection of Route 51 north and south at Warrington Avenue
    The traffic signal at the intersection of Route 51 and Warrington Avenue
is turned off.  All traffic on Warrington Avenue must turn right onto Route
51 north.  Traffic on Route 51 south must access Warrington Avenue by way of
the Route 51 circulation loop at the south end of the Liberty Tunnel.  Traffic
on Route 51 north wanting access to Warrington Avenue must remain on Route
51 north following it to the Banksville Loop and stay on Route 51 south to the
Route 51 circulation loop to Warrington Avenue.

    3. Crane Avenue traffic to Route 51 North
    All traffic on Crane Avenue will turn right onto Route 51 south.  Traffic
on Crane Avenue wishing to access Route 51 north should turn right on Route
51 south and follow to the Route 51 circulation loop at the south end of the
Liberty Tunnel reconnecting with Route 51 north.

    Route 51 North traffic to West Liberty Avenue
    Traffic will follow Route 51 north to the Banksville Loop circling to
Route 51 South and connect with Route 19 South (West Liberty Avenue).


    April 1 work begins at 10 pm: West End Circle becomes free flowing traffic

    The Route 51 south on-ramp to the West End Circle will be closed.
    Motorists will be detoured through the Corliss Tunnel to Chartiers Avenue
to Steuben Street then to Route 51 south.
    West End Bridge southbound traffic to Station Square (West Carson Street)
will be detoured.
    Motorists driving across the West End Bridge to the West End Circle must
follow Steuben Street to Alexander Street to Main Street (Route 60) to the
West End Circle to connect with West Carson Street.
    Route 51 north traffic, by way of the West End Circle, will be detoured
across the West End Bridge to the North Shore exit.
    Motorists will be directed through the Fontella Street and Ridge Avenue
Loop, to the West End Bridge, through the West End Circle to Steuben Street
along to Chartiers Avenue and through the Corliss Tunnel back to Route
51 north (West Carson Street).
    Cross Street will be closed to traffic.
    Motorists will use Steuben Street for access to Main Street (Route 60).


    April 2 work begins at 10 pm: North End of the West End Bridge

    Traveling north on the West End Bridge, traffic is directed to the North
Shore Exit connecting motorists with Western Avenue and Route 65 (Ohio River
Boulevard).
    Ramp from Western Avenue to the West End Bridge is closed.
    Traffic is detoured to Chateau Street to Beaver Street allowing access to
the West End Bridge.


    April 5 work begins at 10 pm: Liberty Bridge and McArdle Roadway

    McArdle Roadway is closed to inbound traffic from Mt. Washington.
    Motorists will follow Grandview Avenue to Woodruff Street to Route 51
north and then to the West End Circle or to the Banksville Loop to the inbound
lanes of the Fort Pitt Tunnel.

    Arlington Avenue to the Liberty Tunnel
    Motorists on Arlington Avenue wanting access to the Liberty Tunnel will be
directed onto the Liberty Bridge toward downtown and will exit at the 6th
Avenue exit to Forbes Avenue, turning left onto Grant Street then to the
Boulevard of the Allies and back to the Liberty Bridge.
    Forbes and 6th Avenue ramp access to the Liberty Bridge outbound is
closed.
    Motorists are routed to Ross Street to 1st Avenue then to Grant Street to
the Boulevard of the Allies and back to the Liberty Bridge.


    April 6 12:01 am: Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel close

    Traffic on the Parkway East (376 West) will be detoured to the Fort
Duquesne Bridge.
    Traffic from Oakland will be detoured to the Boulevard of the Allies, to
the Liberty Bridge.
    Traffic on the Parkway North (279 South) will be detoured to the West End
Bridge.
    Traffic from downtown will be detoured to the Fort Duquesne or Liberty
Bridges.

    These changes in traffic patterns are in preparation for the Fort Pitt
Bridge and Tunnel alternate routes that will be in effect through August 31,
2002.  Motorists are encouraged to follow the posted detour routes and drive
safely through construction zones.
