Mallinckrodt Introduces Two New Therapeutic Systems in the United States For Treating Sleep Apnea

New GoodKnight 418A(TM) and 418P(TM) are Quieter, Have Improved Features

ST. LOUIS, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG) has
received U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance to market its
GoodKnight 418A and GoodKnight 418P continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
systems for the treatment of sleep apnea. The company's convenient and
efficient GoodKnight 418G system has been sold in the United States since
August 1999. The complete line of GoodKnight 418 therapeutic systems has been
sold successfully in Europe since the spring of 1999.
The new-generation GoodKnight 418A/418P are automatically adjusting
positive airway pressure systems (autoPAP) designed to treat obstructive sleep
apnea patients whose breathing is interrupted during sleep. If left
untreated, sleep apnea can eventually lead to high blood pressure, irregular
heart beat or even heart failure. It can also result in daytime drowsiness,
which can affect productivity and safety in the workplace.
The highly advanced GoodKnight 418A/418P systems are quieter and have more
advanced features than the other sleep therapy products Mallinckrodt currently
offers in the United States. The GoodKnight 418A is designed to increase
compliance and enhance patient follow-up. The GoodKnight 418P has an
innovative autoPAP function which thoroughly analyzes and treats
sleep-disturbed breathing.
"Adding the GoodKnight 418A/418P systems to our United States lineup gives
us a complete range of highly competitive autoPAP products and significantly
expands our global reach," said John Hesemann, president of Mallinckrodt's
Respiratory Group. "We believe these two new systems offer more positive
features in their price range than anything currently on the market. They
will help increase Mallinckrodt's share of the growing world market for CPAP
systems."
Produced by Mallinckrodt's Respiratory Group, the GoodKnight 418 series
connects to a nasal interface that patients wear during sleep. Air pressure
generated by the systems prevents air passages from being obstructed, which
helps to insure that patient breathing is uninterrupted during the night.
