The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation Donates $10,000 To Girl Scouts - Mt. Wilson Vista Council To Underwrite Programs Aimed at Homeless Families

Donation to Benefit Scouting and Educational Programs for Girls Residing At
The Euclid Villa Transitional Housing for Families Facility in Pasadena

LOS ANGELES, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Ralphs supermarkets and Food 4 Less
stores have partnered with the Girl Scouts -- Mt. Wilson Vista Council to help
"Build Bright Futures" for girls in Los Angeles County's San Gabriel Valley
affected by the instability and insecurity of homelessness.
The supermarket chains' charitable arm, The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation,
is providing a $10,000 grant to the Girl Scouts -- Mt. Wilson Vista Council to
underwrite its newly established Building Bright Futures program for girls
residing at Euclid Villa, a transitional housing facility for homeless
families in Pasadena.
Representatives from The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation will present the
$10,000 donation at a special ceremony on Monday, April 1 at 4:30 p.m. at the
Girls Scouts -- Mt. Wilson Vista Council office at 101 East Wheeler Avenue in
Arcadia. Brenda Berg, executive director of the Mt. Wilson Vista Council,
will accept the donation.
"At Ralphs and Food 4 Less, we believe in investing in the communities in
which we operate," said John Burgon, president of Ralphs Supermarkets and
chairman of The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation. "We believe very strongly that
the health and welfare of our youth is vital. That's why we are pleased to
partner with the Girl Scouts -- Mt. Wilson Vista Council in supporting its
Building Brighter Futures program which truly benefits girls and young women
who are most in need."
The Girl Scouts -- Mt. Wilson Vista Council will use the donation to help
underwrite the Building Brighter Futures program over a 12-month period during
2002-2003.
"This donation sends a positive message that Ralphs and Food 4 Less are
committed to being good corporate citizens," Berg said. "The generosity of
Ralphs and Food 4 Less will help bring Girl Scouting to an under-served
population, and make a significant and lasting difference in the lives of
girls who are suffering from the affects of homelessness. We hope their
actions will encourage other businesses to do likewise."
Now in its second year, the Building Brighter Futures program offers a
full-subsidized array of Girl Scouting and educational activities for girls
residing in the Euclid Villa Transitional Housing for Families in Pasadena.
In addition to teaching Girl Scout traditions, the program of weekly,
after-school troop meetings at Euclid Villa stresses life skills, self-
sufficiency and self-esteem while allowing girls to have fun in a safe and
supportive environment.
"We are excited that enlightened companies such as Ralphs and Food 4 Less
recognize the important work the Girl Scouts are doing in preparing girls and
young women from all backgrounds for adulthood," Berg said.
Headquartered in Arcadia, the Girl Scouts -- Mt. Wilson Vista Council
serves more than 8,600 girls, ages five through 17, of all ethnicities,
religions, socio-economic backgrounds and abilities in 23 communities
throughout the greater San Gabriel Valley.
Euclid Villa is a jointly funded project of the Union Station Foundation,
Pacific Housing Alliance and the cities of Pasadena and Glendale. Euclid
Villa provides semi-permanent housing and social services to homeless families
