New Life International's World in Need Responds to Medical Exigencies in Nias

BRENTWOOD, Tenn., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Portions of the Island of Nias,
located near the west coast of Northern Sumatra in Indonesia, were ravaged by
the December 2004 Tsunami. Now, the area reels from another earthquake. Dan
Carpenter, president of World in Need, an Angleton, Texas-based subsidiary of
New Life International, recently returned from Nias, where he had joined with
representatives of other charities to respond to some of the more critical
needs. "We established a medical team in a hospital that had been closed,"
said Carpenter. "The medical team was able to treat approximately 4,000
people, meeting medical, optical, dental and pharmaceutical needs. World in
Need provided over $280,000 in medical supplies to the effort." A frequent
traveler to third world communities, Carpenter stated that the island, with a
population in excess of 600,000, had "the worst base level medical care of any
area that I have ever visited." Carpenter stated that "the plan is to rebuild
the hospital with a grant. World in Need will then provide the medical
equipment and supplies needed to operate the hospital, while the team of
charities will arrange for medical teams to conduct 3 month medical services
rotations." Carpenter stated that the new crisis makes the need for relief
even more immediate. "We are preparing a load of medical equipment and
supplies for the hospital that should be shipped this week. We are also
sending another container of relief and construction supplies."
Robby McGee, president of New Life International, stated, "We are grateful
for the opportunity to be part of the relief efforts, responding to the many
problems caused by the Tsunami. We realize that our mission of reaching
people with the Gospel is most effective when we first meet their basic needs
of food, clothing and shelter." McGee recently returned from India, where he
had the opportunity to visit a children's home supported solely by New Life
International and to provide food to poverty and Tsunami stricken areas in
Chennai. "It is an incredible blessing to be a part of providing food to
people who really need it. It's also fulfilling to tell them that God loves
them and gave his only Son, Jesus, to die for their sins and give them eternal
life," stated McGee. "The Bible places a tremendous responsibility on
Christians to reach out to our world, and New Life and World in Need will
continue to fulfill those responsibilities."
New Life International is a Brentwood, Tennessee-based Christian,
nonprofit organization established in 1979 with over $200 million in assets.
The mission of New Life is to fulfill the Great Commission through evangelism,
church planting and humanitarian relief. New Life is the sole member of World
in Need.
