food
PORTLAND, Ore., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Fred Meyer Stores has joined with
the Organic Alliance to help Customers better understand organic products and
the environmental benefits they offer. From April 1st to 30th, the nonprofit
Organic Alliance will partner with Fred Meyer to bring Mother Earth's Organic
Festival(TM) to Nutrition Centers at 127 Fred Meyer stores in five western
states.
Recent passage of federal organic standards has raised the bar for
consumer understanding of organic products and the commitment needed to
support them through continued availability. Yet studies show there remains
widespread confusion among consumers about what exactly organic means.
Mother Earth's Organic Festival(TM) is a national education campaign for
Earth Day 2001, which falls on April 22nd this year. The campaign runs
throughout April, which is considered Earth Month. It offers consumers free
educational materials about organics, including a mini-magazine with
information on organic agriculture, the benefits of soy, recipes, and coupons
prepared by the Organic Alliance. A wide variety of certified organic
products are clearly marked by Fred Meyer at the shelf level for easy
identification by Customers.
Fred Meyer Nutrition Centers feature specially trained personnel who are
experts in natural foods. Based on Nutrition Center sales, Fred Meyer is the
third largest natural foods retail chain in the country.
"We are excited to be part of Mother Earth's Organic Festival(TM),"
Nancy Moon-Eilers, director of merchandising for Fred Meyer Nutrition Centers,
said. "It will encourage people to think about where their food comes from
and how they can make a difference by buying natural food that has been raised
in an environmentally friendly way."
Fred Meyer Nutrition Centers are located inside Fred Meyer multidepartment
stores in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, and Utah. Fred Meyer Stores,
headquartered in Portland, Oregon, is a division of The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR),
which is one of the largest food retail chains in the United States.
