New Technologies and Expanded Reach Across Europe Help Customers to Move
Science Forward
MUNICH, Germany, March 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Thermo Fisher
Scientific Inc. (NYSE: TMO), the world leader in serving science, today
launched a number of innovative new products at Analytica 2008, the world's
largest laboratory technology tradeshow, taking place in Munich, Germany,
from April 1 - 4. The company's new technologies are focused on enabling
customers to take advantage of the most advanced solutions available for
their application -- from complex research to routine analysis.
"Today, we are unveiling in Europe novel tools that are built upon
decades of experience in working with our customers to move science
forward," said Marc N. Casper, executive vice president of Thermo Fisher
Scientific. "We're excited to showcase breakthroughs covering a range of
technology platforms, from RNA-interference to elemental analysis,
molecular spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. You will also see how our
technologies fit together to form a complete workflow, with a comprehensive
protein research laboratory replicated in our booth.
"Furthermore, we continue to make strategic acquisitions that
complement our technology breadth and strengthen our geographic market
position. For example, our additions of NanoDrop micro UV-Vis systems, as
well as Flux and La-Pha-Pack chromatography products and consumables, will
allow us to more effectively deliver our unmatched offerings to customers
in Europe and around the world."
The industry-leading portfolio of laboratory offerings from the
company's premier brands, Thermo Scientific and Fisher Scientific, is on
display in booths 105/204 and 121/220 in Hall B1. Among the new
technologies, products and capabilities introduced this year are:
Elemental Analysis
Thermo Scientific iCE 3000 Series of Atomic Absorption (AA)
spectrometers -- comprising the new iCE 3300, iCE 3400 and iCE 3500, the
innovative iCE 3000 Series has been designed to facilitate prolonged and
simplified operation -- even using the most difficult samples -- with
superior functionality. These new AA spectrometers are the most compact
available and have been developed to accommodate both flame and furnace
analyses. The new Thermo Scientific AA instruments primarily address the
analytical needs of users working in the food safety industry, as well
as the environmental, clinical, pharmaceutical, metals and materials
industries.
Molecular Spectroscopy
Thermo Scientific Nicolet(TM) iS(TM)10 FT-IR spectrometer -- powered by
new OMNIC(TM) Specta(TM) software, this easy-to-use system simplifies
advanced spectroscopy, enabling chemists in analytical and investigative
chemistry laboratories to take advantage of the power of FT-IR.
Thermo Scientific Nicolet(TM) iN(TM)10 FT-IR microscope -- powered by
new OMNIC(TM) Picta(TM) software, this FT-IR microscope is a significant
development that simplifies infrared microscopy for chemists in
analytical and investigative chemistry laboratories. The enhanced iN10
MX version provides new levels of imaging performance to microscopy and
chemical imaging, without the need for an external FT-IR spectrometer.
Thermo Scientific DXR SmartRaman spectrometer -- a new Raman platform
designed specifically for the needs and environment of the quality
control (QC) laboratory, it will enable many QC labs to harness the
power of the Raman technique for the first time.
Thermo Scientific DXR Raman microscope -- designed to help non-
specialist users perform rapid sampling and analysis of small features,
down to one-micron spatial resolution, this novel microscope also offers
superior overall performance and outstanding reproducibility in a
package that anyone can use.
UV-Vis Spectroscopy
Thermo Scientific NanoDrop line of micro-volume spectroscopy systems --
these unique instruments use a patented technology that enables easy
measurement of UV-Vis and fluorescence by eliminating the use of
cuvettes and associated dilutions. The systems are designed for
applications involving small sample volumes, increasingly required in
emerging life sciences research that involves measurement of DNA and
proteins.
Mass Spectrometry
Thermo Scientific LTQ Orbitrap(R) XL(TM) ETD and Thermo Scientific MALDI
LTQ Orbitrap -- these advancements bring electron transfer dissociation
(ETD) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI)
capabilities to the award-winning LTQ Orbitrap hybrid series of mass
spectrometers. The LTQ Orbitrap XL ETD is the only ETD instrument with
both high resolution and accurate mass, enabling the ultimate in
definitive protein characterization. The new MALDI LTQ Orbitrap series
accelerates the analysis of whole tissue, biological and polymer samples
by leveraging the ultrahigh resolution and accurate mass Orbitrap
capabilities.
RNAi Technology
Thermo Scientific Dharmacon Accell(TM) siRNA -- RNA-interference (RNAi)
is a powerful technology used to silence, or knock down, target genes
and the proteins they produce, revealing their role in biological
pathways and disease processes. Accell is a breakthrough gene-silencing
tool that greatly simplifies RNAi technology and eliminates barriers
associated with previous cellular delivery methods. The technology is
expected to accelerate research and drug discovery in many important
life sciences fields, including neuroscience, immunology, stem-cell
science and oncology.
Liquid Handling and Consumables
Thermo Scientific Finnpipette F1 and F2 Series -- the result of more
than 40 years of pipetting expertise, the new Finnpipette F-Series
includes variable and fixed volume single-channel models covering 0.2
microliters to 10 ml for assured versatility. Furthermore, multi-channel
models are available and include 8-, 12- and 16-channel pipettes
covering 1-300 microliters for even greater flexibility. The new F-
Series offers superior accuracy and the highest levels of pipetting
precision for both routine use and for quality-conscious research and
pharma-biotechnology laboratories.
Informatics
Darwin LIMS(TM) 3.0 laboratory information management system -- brings
significant functionality enhancements to the pharmaceutical industry
through a purpose-built LIMS designed specifically for QA/QC, offering
environmental monitoring, dissolution, stability management, product and
batch management and system interfacing.
