Celebrate National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month with Winning Recipes from The Search for the Greatest Grilled Cheese Sandwich in America Recipe Contest Sponsored by DuPont(TM) Teflon(R)

    WILMINGTON, Del., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of April as
National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month, DuPont(TM), the maker of Teflon(R)
non-stick coatings, is pleased to present the winning combinations in The
Search for the Greatest Grilled Cheese Sandwich in America recipe contest. One
overall winner, plus six category winners, took home approximately $40,000 in
cash and prizes in the contest last fall for their creative and tasty
submissions. All of the winning recipes, as well as entries from across the
entire United States, can be found at http://www.teflon.com/grilledcheese.
    The grand prize winning recipe, entered by Ashley Berman of Coral Springs,
Florida, stood out among the nearly 6,000 recipes received from all 50 states.
She won $10,000 plus a trip to Sonoma cheese country for her exotic Caribbean
Grill sandwich, combining Swiss cheese, mango salsa and curry-buttered Italian
bread.
    "Not only does Ashley's recipe taste great, it's extremely creative," said
contest judge Laura Werlin, 2004 James Beard Foundation Award winner and
author of the book, Great Grilled Cheese: 50 Innovative Recipes for Stovetop,
Grill and Sandwich Maker. "She and the other winners deserve to be recognized
for their innovative recipes."

    The Caribbean Grill
    Berman's Caribbean Grill includes the flavors of Swiss cheese, mango salsa
and curry-buttered Italian bread. In this recipe, the curry powder gives the
bread a golden yellow color, which complements the mango salsa. Berman's
winning recipe is as follows:

    Ingredients:
    For Mango Salsa:
     1/2 mango, 1/4 inch diced
     2 tbsp red onion, 1/4 inch diced
     1/4 red bell pepper, 1/4 inch diced
     1 tbsp fresh lime juice
     pinch of sugar
     1/2 tsp kosher salt
     freshly ground black pepper

    For Sandwich:
     3 tbsp butter, at room temperature
     1 tbsp curry powder
     8 slices fresh Italian bread
     8 slices (8 oz) Swiss cheese
     1/4 cup honey mustard

    Directions:
    In a small bowl, mix together all of the salsa ingredients. Set aside.
(Note: this can be made one day ahead and refrigerated. Bring to room
temperature before using.) Makes about 1 1/2 cups. In a small bowl, mix the
butter and curry together. Spread 2 tbsp of the butter mixture on one side of
each slice of bread. Place 4 slices of bread on your work surface, buttered
side down. Spread the mustard on the bread. Place about 2 tbsp of the mango
salsa on the bread followed by the cheese. (You may need to fold the cheese
slices to fit the bread.) Place the remaining 4 bread slices on top, buttered
side up.
    Add the remaining curry butter to a Teflon(R) coated non-stick skillet and
heat over medium heat for 2 minutes. Put the sandwiches in the skillet (in
batches if necessary) and cover and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the
undersides are golden brown and the cheese has begun to melt. Uncover and turn
the sandwiches with a spatula, pressing very firmly. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes,
or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted. Turn once more,
press with a spatula, and cook for 30 seconds. Remove from pan and let cool
for 3 to 5 minutes. Cut diagonally and serve with extra salsa on the side.
Makes 4 sandwiches.

recipes and runners up in the six categories that follow. The category winners

    According to a recent survey, Americans named the grilled cheese
"America's Favorite Homemade Sandwich," and 80 percent cook their toasties on

don't have to be a gourmet chef to make a great grilled cheese sandwich. We're

    Tips for Cooking a Great Grilled Cheese
    According to Werlin, the following simple tips will help all Americans
cook even better grilled cheese sandwiches. More tips can be found in her
book.
    * Grate the cheese to help it melt without overcooking and burning the
      bread;

    * Butter the bread rather than the pan for evenly crisped and flavorful
      bread;

    * Use a non-stick pan or griddle, so the bread doesn't stick to the
      surface and clean up is easier; and

    * About halfway through cooking, be sure to press the sandwich firmly with
      a spatula, to ensure the bread is golden and toasty and the cheese is
      evenly melted.

    According to Werlin, "Versatility is perhaps the grilled cheese sandwich's
greatest feature.  It can be dressed up or dressed down, but its core
ingredients, melted cheese and bread, always remain the same."
