The Achievement Award, co-sponsored by the Cambridge Area Chamber of
Commerce, recognizes outstanding effort by supervisory personnel and employees
in reducing the annual incident rate (on-the-job injuries) by 25 percent or
more in 2002. Federal-Mogul's Cambridge facility excelled far beyond that
threshold by reducing its incident rate by more than 50 percent in 2002.
"Improving our safety record is a critical mission for all Federal-Mogul
employees. Earning this prestigious award gives our employees the recognition
they deserve for continuously keeping safety a top priority," said Robb
Junker, plant manager, Cambridge.
The Cambridge facility keeps its employees highly motivated to follow safe
work practices through two-way communication and achievement incentives.
Employees are rewarded for perfect safety records and are kept informed about
safety issues through monthly safety forums covering current safety issues and
accident prevention measures.
"We take a proactive approach to safety, doing what we can to prevent
accidents and keeping our employees out of harm's way," Junker said. "When an
incident does occur, management goes to the individual to not only discover
what happened, but to understand what happened in a way that allows us to take
steps to prevent the problem from occurring again."
At $25.2 billion, BWC is the largest exclusive state-fund workers'
compensation system in the United States and the second largest underwriter of
workers' compensation insurance in the country.
Federal-Mogul's Cambridge facility manufactures spark plug insulators for
Federal-Mogul's Burlington, Iowa, Ignition assembly facility. The ignition
products, marketed under the Champion(R) brand name, are used in small-engine,
automotive, industrial and heavy-duty applications. Established in 1955, the
facility today employs approximately 210 people.
