Toshiba Announces Availability of Highly Integrated RISC and Graphics Controller for Automotive and Other Real-Time Display Applications

New Device Offers Reduced Component Count with Increased Reliability for
Applications that Combine General-Purpose Computing with Real-Time Graphics
                                   Displays

SAN JOSE, Calif., Embedded Systems Conference, April 3 /PRNewswire/ --
Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today announced the
availability of a 64-bit RISC processor with integrated graphics and display
controller designed for applications that combine general-purpose computing
with real-time graphics displays, including driver information systems, car
infotainment systems and car navigation systems. Designated TX4961XBG-240,
the IC expands Toshiba's portfolio of semiconductor products for automotive
applications. It integrates a TX49/H3 64-bit MIPS-based(TM) RISC CPU with a
display controller and hardware graphics accelerators in a single system-on-a-
chip (SoC). TAEC will be displaying the SoC in booth #1510 at the Embedded
Systems Conference Silicon Valley 2006 here this week.
    "The TX4961XBG-240 is Toshiba's first TX49-based product to combine a 64-
bit CPU and a graphics display controller with a 2D hardware graphics
accelerator and video frame grabber. By offloading the graphics, display and
video functions to dedicated hardware, the full power of the processor is
available for application-specific processing," said Shardul Kazi, vice
president of the ASSP Business Unit at Toshiba America Electronic Components,
Inc. "The TX4961XBG-240 offers a high-throughput, cost-effective and reliable
system design that is optimized for automotive dashboard displays that combine
an instrumentation display with navigation information and video. It is also
well-suited for numerous other applications that require the high-quality
display of real-time data."
The TX4961XBG-240 features an on-board DDR SDRAM controller, unified
memory architecture and multiple on-chip buses that ensure that each on-chip
subsystem has sufficient memory bandwidth. The TX4961XBG-240 also
incorporates a video frame grabber, AC-Link and I2C controllers, various
timers and high-speed serial ports, 10-bit ADC, 16-bit PWM outputs, GPIO ports
and CANbus and Media-LB interfaces with DMA, interrupt, external bus and NAND
Flash controllers.

Highlights of the TX4961XBG-240 include the following:
     * 64-bit TX49/H3 MIPS RISC CPU that runs a large code base
        *  Core operates at 240MHz
        * Integrates 16KB instruction cache and 16KB data cache
     * Operates in automotive/industrial temperature range of -40 degrees C
to 85 degrees C ambient temperature
     * Features 24-bit true color pixels with 8-bit alpha blending on all
operations to enable very high quality displays
     * Has a graphics scheduler that offloads the CPU by reading display list
commands directly from memory and dispatching operations to the
        hardware acceleration engines
     * Incorporates a 5-layer graphics architecture that eases the task of
        managing overlays
     * Has engines providing hardware acceleration for flexible
transformation operations, for rotation and scaling operations, and
for line and triangle drawing operations
     * Has a blitting engine that can perform font expansion and scaling
     * Has ADC and PWM outputs to control LCD brightness and contrast
     *  Housed in a 456-pin PBGA with a 1mm ball pitch

    Pricing and Availability
Samples are currently available and volume production is scheduled to
begin in the fourth quarter of 2006. The device is priced at $40.00 each in
10,000-piece quantities.
The RBTX4961 reference board is also available.
