Gateway, Inc. Elects Elizabeth Dole to its Board of Directors

Former President of American Red Cross and One of The World's Three Most
Admired Women, Dole Adds Depth and Perspective to Gateway and its Vision

SAN DIEGO, April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Gateway, Inc. (NYSE: GTW) today
announced the election of Elizabeth Dole to the Company's Board of Directors.
"Gateway is graced with the privilege of attracting and electing such a
positive, admired leader as Elizabeth Dole to our Board of Directors," said
Ted Waitt, Gateway's Chairman of the Board. "Elizabeth demonstrates the same
kind of values, passion, and drive we hold dearly at Gateway. Her life,
accomplishments, and career speak about creativity and efficiency, character
and achievement -- all the ingredients needed to continually surpass
expectations. I can't think of a better person suited to join our board
today."
Dole has had an extraordinary public service career. She has worked for
five United States presidents and, in 1998, was named as one of the world's
top three most admired women, according to a Gallup poll. A Duke and Harvard
graduate, Dole has served as Secretary of Transportation, Secretary of Labor,
and Deputy Assistant to the President for Consumer Affairs.
During Mrs. Dole's tenure at Transportation, she managed the sale of
Conrail, the government-owned freight railroad and the flagship of
privatization. Safety was a top priority and the United States enjoyed the
safest period to date in all three major transportation areas -- rail, air,
and highway. As Secretary of Labor, Mrs. Dole worked to increase safety and
health in the workplace, advocated upgrading the skills of the American work
force and moved for improved relations between labor and management -- playing
a key role in resolving the bitter 11-month Pittson Coal Strike.
As President of the American Red Cross, Mrs. Dole launched a sweeping
transformation of how Red Cross collects, tests, and distributes nearly half
the nation's blood supply. Under her leadership, the American Red Cross was
consistently recognized for outstanding financial stewardship. In 1996, for
example, Money, magazine named the American Red Cross the nation's "Top-Rated
Charity" for its great efficiency over a three-year period, directing 92 cents
of every dollar spent to programs and services.
In 1999, Mrs. Dole made history when she left the American Red Cross to
begin an exploratory committee for President of the United States.
Dole joins Gateway's Board of Directors effective May 1, 2000.
