MIPS Technologies' Multi-threading and DSP Solutions Supported by Green Hills Software's Development Tools

Application Development Environment Offers Quick Time-to-Profit for Licensees
of Revolutionary MIPS32(R) 34K(TM) and 24KE(TM) Core Families

SAN JOSE, Calif., Embedded Systems Conference, April 4
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS), and Green
Hills Software, Inc., today announced that Green Hills Software's
comprehensive set of software development tools for embedded applications
supports the latest MIPS(R) processor cores: the MIPS32(R) 34K(TM) family, a
revolutionary multi-threading solution for embedded applications, and the
MIPS32 24KE(TM) family, which features the highest performance available in a
32-bit synthesizable core, together with an integrated DSP capability.
Green Hills Software's fully integrated, end-to-end MULTI(R) Integrated
Development Environment (IDE), which is optimized for the MIPS32 and MIPS64(R)
architectures, enables MIPS licensees and end users of 34K and 24KE core-based
systems to rapidly develop, debug, and optimize code, and significantly reduce
development costs and time-to-market.
"MIPS Technologies has done it again with its new multi-threading and
integrated DSP capabilities. Developers who want to take advantage of these
remarkable new cores can quickly reap the performance, power and cost benefits
by using the best development environment available for MIPS processors," said
Mike Wolf, general manager of advanced products at Green Hills Software.
"Developers who are trying to keep up with the insatiable demand for
higher throughput, lower system cost and lower system power by integrating
new, leading-edge technologies such as multi-threading, can do so without
compromising productivity, thanks to the MIPS Ecosystem and the support of
leading tools providers such as Green Hills Software," said Jack Browne, vice
president of marketing at MIPS Technologies. "Green Hills' MULTI IDE offers
developers a best-in-class environment for quickly and easily designing and
deploying their MIPS-Based products."
In addition to the 34K and 24KE core families, Green Hills' MULTI IDE
supports the MIPS32 24K(R), 4KE(TM), 4K(R), and 4KS(TM) core families. It also
supports MIPS-Based(TM) processors developed by MIPS Technologies licensees
including AMD, Broadcom, IDT, LSI Logic, NEC, PMC-Sierra, QuickLogic and
Toshiba.
Other Green Hills Software development tools available for MIPS-Based
applications include the INTEGRITY(R) RTOS, a secure, royalty-free real-time
operating system for mission-critical embedded applications, which currently
supports the MIPS32 4K family. Support for the 24K and 24KE families is now
underway and is expected to be announced this summer.

    About the MIPS32 34K Family
The MIPS32 34K core family is a revolutionary multi-threading solution for
high-performance, cost-sensitive embedded applications. Implementing the
MIPS(R) MT ASE, it processes multiple software threads in parallel, masking
the effect of memory latency to deliver significant gains in system
performance and cost savings, with a very modest increase in die size.
Internal benchmarks indicate that the 34Kc(TM) core running just two threads
achieved a 60-percent speed increase over a single-threaded processor with
only a 14-percent increase in area. In addition, the 34K core family leverages
the high-performance 24KE microarchitecture, which includes the MIPS DSP
Application Specific Extension (ASE) for developers who want the benefits of
an integrated DSP capability.

    About the MIPS32 24KE Family
    The MIPS32 24KE core family leverages the high-performance 24K(TM)
microarchitecture and the MIPS DSP ASE to provide a very efficient DSP
capability while significantly reducing overall SoC die area, cost, and power
consumption. The DSP instructions in 24KE cores improve signal processing
performance up to 3x over a range of embedded applications when compared to
RISC implementations without the DSP ASE.
