HOUSTON, April 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Reliant Energy today announced
the availability of a new discount offer currently available to former LITE-UP
Texas customers in the Houston area to help them better manage their summer
energy bills. In addition, the company plans to launch other innovative
products to help customers manage energy costs as the summer nears.
Reliant Energy's 2006 Secure Plan with Summer Savings provides these
Houston area customers with price security through the end of 2006 and a
discount during the hottest months of the year. Specific benefits include:
* A 5 percent discount from Reliant Energy's current price to beat (PTB)
during the summer months of June through September 2006;
* No monthly customer charge, meaning customers pay only for electricity
they use;
* No enrollment fee and no cancellation fee;
* Pricing that would vary only for changes in law or regulatory charges.
Eligible former LITE-UP Texas customers will receive a letter beginning
April 7 inviting them to enroll in the plan. Eligible customers will receive
the 5 percent discount beginning after their first meter read date in June.
"Through products like our Secure Plan with Summer Savings, our education
efforts around home energy efficiency and our CARE program, we believe that
former LITE-UP customers in the Houston-area will have options to help them
manage their bills through the hot summer months," said Glen Stancil, vice

In the past, low-income residents were able to receive discounts on
electric service through LITE-UP Texas, which began in 2002. Texas residents
were deemed eligible for LITE-UP through their participation in one or more of
the programs administered by Texas Department of Human Services (TDHS).
Funding for LITE-UP was suspended in the 2005 Texas Legislative budgeting
process.
Two weeks ago, Reliant introduced its One Year Secure Plan with Heat
Relief, which enables consumers to receive up to $200 in bill credits over
four months if summer temperatures in Houston exceed historical averages.
