power research paper which was presented at APEC 2006. The focus of APEC is
the practical and applied aspects of the power electronics business. The
sponsorship of research is part of the Solved by Sipex plan to develop
technology and products which provide unique and innovative solutions for the
global engineering community.

The use of digital solutions for power management ICs allows for the
integration of a complete power management system on a single chip, reducing
space requirements and overall system cost while increasing system performance
and reliability.
The research presented at APEC focused on a digital controller for DC-DC
switching converters used in battery-powered handheld devices. The controller
operates in two modes and encompasses novel designs for a digital pulse-width
modulator (PWM), and an all-digital pulse-frequency modulator (PFM). Digital
control of low-power switching converters provides numerous benefits including
the ability to use digital design tools, flexibility in transferring to
different implementation technology, and low sensitivity on external
influences.
The design of this controller can easily be transferred from one
implementation technology to another, and also meets the requirements of very
high frequency operation in DPWM mode, and very low power consumption in the
DPFM required for low-power portable and handheld devices.
