American Eagle Outfitters Reports March Total Sales Increase of 15.7%

    WARRENDALE, Pa., April 5 /PRNewswire/ --
American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (Nasdaq: AEOS) today announced total sales for
the five fiscal weeks ended April 1, 2000, increased 15.7% to $73.9 million
from $63.8 million for the five-week period ended April 3, 1999.  Comparable
sales for the 2000 period declined 0.3% compared to the corresponding
five-week period last year.
    Sales for the nine weeks ended April 1, 2000, were $120.2 million compared
to the $99.9 million for the nine-week period last year, an increase of 20.4%.
Comparable store sales for the nine weeks ended April 1, 2000, increased 3.1%
compared to the corresponding nine-week period ended April 3, 1999.
    George Kolber, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer, noted that: "We
were pleased with March sales results, particularly given our 33.1% increase
in comparable store sales in March 1999.  Over the past several years, we've
built a very successful dress business, which is centered around the Easter
holiday.  As expected, our March 2000 comp store sales were impacted by this
year's three-week shift of Easter to late April."
