Tadpole Computer Announces Availability of FIPS 140-2 Compliant Wireless Ultra-Thin Client for Government Users

Includes Wireless Security From Fortress Technologies
to Deliver an Integrated Mobile Solution for
                   Mission-Critical Government Applications

    WASHINGTON, April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- FOSE 2005, Booth 3629 -- Tadpole
Computer announced today the availability of a Federal Information Processing
Standards (FIPS) 140-2 compliant wireless mobile solution for government
users. Based on Tadpole's Comet line of wireless Sun Ray ultra-thin clients
and Fortress Technologies' family of secure wireless gateways, the solution
provides secure encrypted wireless networking for Federal network and
communications systems that handle sensitive information.
Comet, Tadpole's wireless notebook version of the Sun Ray ultra-thin
client from Sun Microsystems, will now interoperate with Fortress
Technologies' family of security gateways, which are FIPS 140-2 certified.
Fortress products are FIPS certified and provide user privacy, access control,
device and user authentication as well as data link layer integrity to guard
against denial-of-service attacks. The products use powerful encryption
algorithms, including DES, 3DES and AES, with higher levels of security than
the already encrypted, proprietary Sun Ray protocol utilized by the Tadpole
Comet products.
Starting in the third quarter of 2005, all new Tadpole Comet products will
be upgradeable to this FIPS 140-2 compliant wireless capability with a simple
firmware upgrade. This option will initially be available to several beta
customers that will deploy the solution in the second quarter of 2005, with
general availability in the third quarter of this year. Pricing for the
client hardware will be comparable to current 802.11a/b/g solutions.
"The combination of an ultra-thin client that runs no operating system and
has no internal memory or storage devices together with FIPS 140-2 compliant
encrypted wireless is proving to be of great interest to customers in the
Federal government market," said Mark Johnston, president and CEO, Tadpole
Computer. "We will be starting several pilots in the next few weeks with some
very large customers. These customers are all extremely excited about the
reality of FIPS-compliant wireless in an ultra-thin client as it offers the
only viable option for secure applications that will benefit from wireless
network connectivity."
"We are committed to providing best-of-class, secure mobile solutions
designed to support government users. That is why we have partnered with
Fortress Technologies," said Johnston. "In addition to being the security
system of choice for critical commercial applications, Fortress Technologies
has redefined the use of wireless technologies across state, local and Federal
government agencies."
"The combination of Fortress' government-certified security technology and
Tadpole's ultra-thin client opens up a new world of possibilities for the use
of wireless across state, local and federal government agencies," said Shawn
Hughes, CEO, Fortress Technologies. "Ensuring that security extends from the
device to the core means that government agencies can offer their users the
mobility and flexibility that comes with wireless devices, without introducing
risk into their network or compromising the privacy of sensitive data."
Veterans Administration (VA) hospitals and clinics, in particular stand to
gain by using Tadpole's FIPS-compliant Comet Sun Ray ultra-thin clients for
delivering highly secure and mobile access to patient records. Instead of
traditional desktop technology, VA doctors can have easy and secure access to
patient records, complete with integrated and encrypted Wi-Fi, surpassing the
security and management limitations of today's conventional personal computer
platform.
Fortress has completed large government wireless security deployments for
the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army,
U.S. Navy, Defense Commissary Agency and the Department of Energy. In
addition, Fortress customer base includes state and local government agencies,
such as the Syracuse Police Department.
