Gateway Ends the WLAN Flim-Flam

New Gateway Wireless Access Points Add High Security, Remove High Price

POWAY, Calif., April 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Businesses wary of WLANs
because of their complexities, poor security and high prices finally have a
vendor with a viable option.

Gateway, Inc. today launches the Gateway 7000(R) Series(R) wireless access
points (APs) -- offering enterprise-class security features at a decidedly
non-enterprise starting price of $299. With ease-of-use functionality such as
a built-in RADIUS server, multiple mounting brackets, an automatic wireless
distribution system and power over Ethernet, Gateway 7000 Series APs allow
overworked IT managers to build WLANs (wireless local area networks) quickly
and easily.
The APs mark Gateway's entry into the networking market, building out an
enterprise systems product portfolio that includes Gateway-branded servers,
storage and management software. The company today also announced the launch
of Gateway managed and unmanaged switches (see separate press release for more
information).
    Available in single band (Gateway(R) 7001 802.11g) and dual-band
(Gateway(R) 7001 802.11a+g) options, the new Gateway APs provide continuous,
high-speed access between all wireless clients and the local area network.
Both Gateway's single- and dual-band APs feature an Intel(R) IXP422 network
processor, web-based configuration software and VLAN support. In addition,
the APs offer two 10/100 ports, so that organizations can create both internal
and guest networks on the same AP. Gateway's single-band AP launches today,
while its dual-band AP launches April 13.
"Businesses are tired of empty promises about the ease of use and
inexpensive nature of deploying WLANs," said Scott Weinbrandt, senior vice
president of Gateway's Enterprise Systems Division. "With 802.11 wireless
moving from 'b' to the more secure and higher-speed 'a' and 'g' standards,
Gateway is telling organizations to wait no longer. We've stepped up to the
plate with two enterprise-class products that don't require an enterprise-
class IT department to configure and manage."
Targeted at small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), mid-tier
corporations and educational institutions, Gateway(R) 7001 APs offer benefits
such as:
-- Ease of installation -- Customers can physically install the APs using
multiple mounting options, and then configure them in minutes with
web- based Kickstart software. In addition, once one AP is set up,
built-in wireless distribution functionality automatically populates
additional APs (up to eight) with the correct configuration.
-- Full management options -- Dual 10/100 ports allow IT managers to set
up individual guest/private networks on the same AP with minimal
configuration. In addition, SMBs can take advantage of a built-in
RADIUS server (up to 100 users), saving the need for a separate
        authentication server.
-- Enterprise-class security -- While easy to set up, the APs offer
sophisticated built-in security features such as Wi-Fi Protected
Access (WPA), Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), 64/128-bit WEP
encryption, PEAP, MSCHAP v2, inhibit SSID broadcast and MAC address
        filtering.

"In both their price and functionality, Gateway is taking a disruptive
approach with these two new wireless APs," said Peter Kastner, executive vice
president and chief research officer, Aberdeen Group. "Many wireless vendors
are ignoring the pleas of small- and medium-sized businesses, who desire
enterprise security and much more simplicity in set-up. SMBs clearly stand to
benefit from these new Gateway APs."
The Gateway 7000 Series APs are compliant with IEEE 802.11a, IEEE
802.11b, IEEE 802.11g and IEEE 802.11a turbo wireless networking standards.
Under typical network conditions, they provide bandwidth of up to 54 Mbps for
IEEE 802.11a or IEEE 802.11g, 11 Mbps for IEEE 802.11b and 108 Mbps for IEEE
802.11a turbo. Both access points are also fully Wi-Fi certified.
The Gateway 7000 Series wireless APs are offered at a base price of $299
and $399 for the Gateway 7001 802.11g and Gateway 7001 802.11a+g,
respectively. Both products include Gateway's standard one-year, on-site,
next-business day, parts-and-labor limited warranty(1), upgradeable to three
years upon request(1). In addition, Gateway's optional four-hour, on-site
response service is also available for customers wanting a heightened level of
support(1). Finally, the company offers 24x7 phone support through a
dedicated team of wireless certified technicians.(1)
