Discerning Fact from Fiction: How Do You Choose Your News in a Muddled Media Landscape?

DETROIT, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Advocates posing as reporters, blogs as
news outlets, and photo illustrations as photojournalism are some of the
practices that make discerning credible journalism a challenge today. Anne
Thompson, NBC News chief financial correspondent and former Detroit TV
reporter, will share her unique perspective on these concerns as distinguished
guest speaker for Women In Communications of Detroit's annual Matrix Awards on
Monday, May 23, 2005.
The evening dinner and awards gala hosted by the WIC of Detroit will take
place at the Century Grille in Detroit's historic Gem Theater, 333 Madison
Avenue. Cocktails and a silent auction begin at 6:30 p.m.
    Awards to be bestowed are:
    * The Headliner Award, recognizing the lifelong achievements of a WIC of
Detroit member
    * The Vanguard Award, recognizing an individual or organization that has
enriched the general quality of life through a communication medium
    * The Diamond Award, recognizing an individual or organization that has
improved the working conditions of women in the workplace.

Standard Federal Bank is among the Matrix sponsors.
Anne Thompson formerly worked as an award-winning general assignment
reporter in Detroit for WDIV-TV from 1986 to 1997. She was honored with
seven Emmy Awards for a variety of Detroit-area stories, including a report of
the near riots following the Detroit Pistons' 1990 championship win.
Currently based in New York, Ms. Thompson has been with NBC since 1997. She
reports on a variety of national stories for all NBC News broadcasts, and was
cited as the most visible female correspondent on the nightly network
broadcasts in 2002. Ms. Thompson graduated from the University of Notre Dame
in Indiana with a degree in American studies.
Tickets for the gala are $50 for WIC, PRSA and IABC members and $65 for
non-members. Call RoseAnn Nicolai at 248-582-8465 or e-mail
