RapidStream Debuts VPN/Firewall Appliance for Corporate Intranet and Branch Offices

Internal Security Strengthened to Combat Rise in Intranet Attacks

SAN FRANCISCO, RSA Conference, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- RapidStream, Inc.,
the developer of scalable, integrated high-performance firewall and virtual
private networking (VPN) appliances, today announced the RapidStream 1000, a
powerful solution for corporate intranet and branch office security. The
RapidStream 1000 combines the powerful performance of 200 Mbps firewall with
50 Mbps of VPN, allowing companies to implement security within their
corporate intranet at an excellent price/performance ratio. The RapidStream
1000 has the same enterprise-level security feature set as RapidStream's
high-end security appliances and is the first product in its class to offer a
dedicated high availability (HA) port, raising the bar for under
$2,000 security appliances.
"Both the corporate intranet and branch offices require the same rugged
protection as the main office network," said Vince Liu, RapidStream president
and CEO. "The RapidStream 1000 joins our family of high-performance firewall
and VPN solutions designed to help companies seal security gaps, whether
external or internal."

Dramatic Increase in Internet and Intranet Attacks
In a recent release by the Computer Security Institute dated
March 12, 2001 (http://www.gocsi.com), the following findings were reported from
their "2001 Computer Crime and Security Survey." Based on the responses from
538 computer security practitioners in the U.S., the survey stated the
following: seventy percent of the respondents (primarily large corporations
and government agencies) cited their Internet connection as a frequent point
of attack; an eleven percent increase from last year's survey. Thirty one
percent reported recurrent attacks on their internal systems. Computer
break-ins have serious financial implications as well. Sixty four percent of
those surveyed acknowledged financial losses due to computer breaches. Thirty
five percent were willing and/or able to quantify their financial losses,
which totaled more than $377 million.
Liu stated, "By implementing RapidStream's firewall/VPN appliances within
a company's network, security breaches can be prevented, thereby protecting
confidential company data and avoiding financial losses."

    Powerful RapidStream Features
Key features of the RapidStream 1000 include stateful firewall inspection,
hacker defense, IPSec VPN and digital certificates. The RapidStream 1000 is
the first intranet/branch office security appliance to offer a high
availability port for failover protection, which eliminates costly downtime.
If the primary unit fails, the backup unit automatically activates via the
industry-standard virtual routing redundancy protocol (VRRP), negating the
inherent delays in dispatching a technician to install and configure a
replacement unit.
Because the RapidStream 1000 is powered by the company's patent-pending
programmable security ASIC, RapidCore(R), latency is measured in microseconds,
crucial for Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or similar delay-sensitive
applications where millisecond latencies are an impediment. All of these
features improve VPN administration and the overall performance of critical
security services.

    Bandwidth Efficiency With RapidStream 1000
Emerging Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) service providers are installing
fiber optic backbone networks and providing higher-speed Internet services
(such as 10 Mbps Ethernet speeds) at DSL service pricing. Companies wishing to
make the most of such services as they become available will need a high
throughput firewall/VPN appliance such as the RapidStream 1000. Competitive
products designed mainly for home or small office use cannot process VPN
policies past ISDN or DSL speeds, while RapidStream's robust throughput allows
companies to secure these higher speed Internet access services without
creating a performance bottleneck.

    Pricing and Availability
The RapidStream 1000 will be available in May 2001 from RapidStream
reseller and partner channels. Pricing is $1,995.

    About RapidStream
RapidStream uses patent-pending RapidCore technology to deliver integrated
virtual private network (VPN) and firewall solutions to service providers,
data centers and enterprises that require a high degree of interoperability,
scalability, and security. RapidStream's entire product family is ICSA Labs
firewall certified. The company is backed by ING Baring, Cabletron, Acorn
Venture, InveStar Capital, Star Capital and Technology Associates.
