    SAN FRANCISCO, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- RSA(R) CONFERENCE --
RSA Security Inc. (Nasdaq: RSAS), the most trusted name in e-security(TM),
today announced the recipients of its fourth annual RSA Security Awards in the
areas of mathematics, public policy and industry. The three recipients were
Dr. Scott Vanstone, a noted cryptographer and founder of Certicom Corporation
for Mathematics; the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
Advanced Encryption Standard Committee for Public Policy; and Gemplus, a
leading manufacturer of smart cards, for Industry. The prizes were presented
today to representatives of the three recipients at the opening session of the
RSA Conference 2001 in San Francisco.
"We are extremely honored to recognize the outstanding contributions these
recipients have made to the field of cryptography, and believe that through
their dedication and innovation, they have made a tangible and profound
difference in the marketplace," said Art Coviello, CEO and president of RSA
Security.
Instituted in 1998, RSA Security's annual award recognizes individuals and
organizations that have made significant, ongoing contributions to security
issues and cryptography. A committee of members from industry, the academic
community and the public sector selected the winners of the 2001 RSA Security
Awards.

    Mathematics Winner: Dr. Scott Vanstone
The RSA Award in Mathematics is presented to an individual or organization
that has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of cryptographic
sciences in the field of mathematics and its application.
Professor Scott Vanstone is Chief Cryptographer and Founder of Certicom
Corp., and is also holder of the NSERC/Pitney Bowes Industrial Research Chair
in cryptography at St. Jerome's University and the University of Waterloo.
During his career, Scott has made significant contributions to several areas
of mathematics including combinatorics, finite geometries, finite fields,
algorithmic number theory, and cryptography. He is best known for fundamental
work in the security analysis and efficient implementation of elliptic curve
cryptography and its subsequent standardization and commercialization. In
1998, Professor Scott was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada's
Academy of Sciences.

Public Policy Winner: The NIST's AES Selection Committee
The RSA Award in Public Policy is presented to an individual or

As a non-regulatory agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Technology
Administration, NIST helps strengthen the U.S. economy and improve the quality
of life by working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements
and standards through four strategic partnerships: the Measurement and
Standards Laboratories, the Advanced Technology Program, the Manufacturing
Extension Partnership and the Baldridge National Quality Program. NIST's AES
Selection Committee is responsible for formally proposing AES for
incorporation in a new Draft Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS)
for public review and comment.

    Industry Winner: Gemplus
The RSA Award in Industry goes to an individual or organization that has
greatly facilitated the widespread use or application of advanced
cryptographic technologies in the marketplace.
