SD 2001 Opens With Record Attendance and Exhibitors in San Jose

Keynote Addresses From Top Industry Executives Set the Stage for Tomorrow's
Expo Opening and the Advent of Web Services World

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Software Development
Conference & Expo 2001 (SD 2001), the most influential event in the
development industry, opened with a series of keynote addresses leading toward
tomorrow's opening of the exhibition floor and the launch of the inaugural Web
Services World conference. With virtually every major software company
exhibiting, diverse and compelling conference tracks, and the debut of Web
Services World, the first conference ever dedicated to the Universal
Description and Delivery Initiative (UDDI), SD 2001 is set to break past
attendance records.
The event kicked off Sunday with a keynote presentation from John "maddog"
Hall, the executive director of Linux International. Larry Constantine,
author of Software for Use and professor of Computing Sciences at the
University of Technology, starts today's event with his keynote about creating
usable processes for usable software.
The exhibition begins in full on Tuesday, with the opening of the
exhibition floor and the launch of Web Services World, sponsored by the
companies who launched UDDI -- Ariba, IBM and Microsoft -- as well as
Bowstreet, Epicentric and Sun Microsystems.
The event, running through Thursday, April 12, is the industry's most
progressive and comprehensive forum dedicated to the software development
arena.
"At every turn with SD 2001, the interest level has exceeded our
expectations," said Mike Gottlieb, show director for SD 2001. "This is a
fascinating time in the software development industry and SD 2001 provides a
snapshot of every facet of the marketplace. Between Web Services World, our
spectacular expo hall, exciting keynote presentations, and first-rate panels
and sessions, SD 2001 is bound to be the best in our 14-year history."

    Tomorrow's highlights include:

    Web Services World
The one-and-only conference dedicated to the education and discussion of
web services and supporting XML-based technologies and standards begins
tomorrow. Running on April 10-11, attendees are invited to visit the booths
of sponsor exhibitors, Ariba, Bowstreet, Epicentric, IBM, Microsoft, and Sun
Microsystems to get a first-hand look at the showcased products and services
of these premier companies.
In addition to top-notch displays, WSW participants are urged to attend
tomorrow's keynote addresses by Rod Smith, IBM's vice president of emerging
technologies, at 8:30 a.m. and Simon Phipps, chief software evangelist at Sun
Microsystems, at 9:15 a.m. A Power Panel, "Collaboration vs. Competition," is
scheduled for 12:15 p.m. at which representatives from leading Web services
companies will share how the Internet has changed the way they fundamentally
go about the business of competing and computing.
Complementing its keynote addresses and panels, Web Services World is
offering more than 20 educational sessions focusing on topics such as XML,
SOAP, WSDL, and RDF.

    SD 2001 Exhibition Floor
The SD 2001 Expo kicks off tomorrow, giving attendees the chance to talk
face-to-face with visionary tool developers and test new products from
exhibitors. Both Grady Booch, one of the original developers of the Unified
Modeling Language (UML), and Bjarne Stroustrup, the designer and original
implementer of C++, will be giving keynote addresses. At 4:30 p.m., attendees
are invited to a party on the show floor with food, beverages and live music
from 80's cover band Tainted Love.
In addition to the exhibition, industry gurus will teach
information-packed courses and participate in a variety of panel discussions
designed to enlighten and educate attendees about the latest trends in
programming languages, development, tools and technologies. SD 2001 provides
ample opportunity for the exchange of knowledge through panels,
Birds-of-a-Feather gatherings, tutorials, and other networking opportunities.
SD 2001 offers five days of boundless opportunities for developers to
enhance their success in the high-speed environment we live and work in today.
