Rational Test RealTime and Rational QualityArchitect for RealTime Round Out
Comprehensive Solution for Embedded Developers
SAN FRANCISCO, April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- At the Embedded Systems
Conference, Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL), the e-development company, today
introduced Rational Test RealTime, a new product to automate testing of
embedded, real-time and distributed applications.
In addition, Rational introduced Rational(R) QualityArchitect for
RealTime, which along with Rational Rose RealTime, Rational Test RealTime,
Rational ClearQuest, Rational ClearCase, Rational Unified Process and Rational
RequisitePro, provide the software industry's most comprehensive development,
design and test automation solution for developers of embedded and distributed
real-time systems.
Rational Test RealTime uses technology acquired as the result of
Rational's purchase in March of ATTOL Testware, the Toulouse, France-based
company that had focused on the testing of embedded software systems.
Rational Test RealTime manages the tedious and error-prone aspects of
implementing, deploying and running an embedded test environment. It
addresses all test levels, from individual software and UML model components
to overall system testing, including unit, integration and validation testing,
on any host and for any embedded target.
Rational QualityArchitect for RealTime is integrated with Rational Test
RealTime to add test automation capabilities to Rational's market-leading
Unified Modeling Language (UML) design automation tool, Rational Rose
RealTime. While Rational Test RealTime tests interactions between an entire
Rational Rose RealTime model and its environment, whether real or simulated,
Rational QualityArchitect for RealTime specifically focuses on testing
individual capsules and overall integration of those capsules within a
Rational Rose RealTime model. Rational Quality Architect for RealTime was
constructed specifically for the designer testing with Rational Rose RealTime,
and works with both C++ and Java(TM).
Rational has also added support for the Sun Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME)
platform and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) to Rational Rose
RealTime. Developers can now use Rational Rose RealTime to rapidly develop
e-device applications with the UML, then automatically generate and deploy
complete Java-based applications into pagers, cell phones, set top boxes,
automobiles, PDAs, and all other devices using the J2ME platform.
"The lack of available tools for the embedded developer community is
becoming an increasingly serious issue," said Theresa Lanowitz, research
director for Gartner, Inc. "Tools that address markets where failure is not
an option are necessary, especially as we become increasingly dependent upon
software applications running on embedded systems. The unification of tests
with design artifacts and source code directly addresses the problem of
assessing test coverage. Having an off-the-shelf solution that applies the
rigor of avionics standards to embedded telecom, automotive and medical
software is a significant advance for those markets."
"Rational's acquisition of ATTOL Testware is great for customers of both
companies," said Bertand Hardy, Group Leader -- Software Development Methods &
Tools of Philips Consumer Communications. "We've been using both ATTOL and
Rational products side-by-side for many years. ATTOL Testware's testing
technology for critical software has met our expectation and has been utilized
to support the development of some of our most demanding embedded equipment,
so it is a natural fit with Rational's global presence and proven expertise in
application development. Combining these companies is a definite win for us."
