The outage on Turkey Point Unit 4 was completed this past weekend in just
15 days, 15 hours and 45 minutes at the plant 25 miles south of Miami.
Westinghouse Corp., which designed the Unit 4 reactor, has informed FPL that
this is the shortest outage conducted by a Pressurized Water Reactor design in
the United States to date.
Turkey Point also was successful in maintaining its excellent industrial
safety record. There was only one minor injury to the FPL workforce during the
entire outage.
"Although we do not set out deliberately to achieve records, we are
pleased when they are reached as a result of a comprehensive team effort,
excellent planning, and a focus on safety," said Art Stall, senior vice
president of FPL's nuclear division. "The efficiency contributes to our
ability to provide reliable, low-cost power to our customers."
Turkey Point developed a new outage command center that resulted in a
streamlined process. The outage center is staffed 24 hours a day and is
equipped with monitors and a wireless communications system that allows
command center personnel to observe and communicate with staff in the field.
Florida Power & Light owns and operates two nuclear units at Turkey Point
and two at St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant on Hutchinson Island near Ft. Pierce.
